Michael Rooker Talks Guardians Of The Galaxy And Not Reading Any Comics
We had a big rundown of Guardians of the Galaxy news yesterday (click here if you missed it) and the announcement that Bradley Cooper would be voicing Rocket Raccoon (click here for that), but stuff is happening with that movie every day. Of course it’s filming in the UK right now, but the cast, crew, and other Marvel folks have been out and about teasing fans mercilessness since Comic-Con and the debut of an amazing sizzle reel. Today’s Guardians of the Galaxy entry features Michael Rooker talking about the film and how James Gunn told him to approach the role of Yondu.
Rooker was snapped filming a spaceship crash scene this past weekend in full costume. Gunn, Rooker, and everyone else knew the paparazzi were in the trees but they weren’t too concerned. The vultures were nearly a half mile away from the set. Well it turns out they had super long lenses on their cameras. They were able to snap some great pics, which you can see below in case you missed them the first time. Rooker finished those scenes this week and flew to Atlanta to attend this year’s Dragon Con. The actor spoke with SuperHeroHype about the movie and how his buddy James Gunn told him not to read any of the comics:
When I first got the role of Yondu, [director James] Gunn was like, ‘Don’t read any of the comics!’ but It’s beautiful stuff. Whenever you do a film of comic book characters and stuff you don’t know how much you can show, you don’t know how much is going to be brought out. Nowadays movies are done and they already have two or three others planned out. So stuff you do in this one, you ask “Why aren’t we doing this?” and they say, “Well be patient!”
It’s not out of the ordinary for directors to tell actors not to read comics. They have a script and they want to stick to it. I’m sure Gunn and Rooker talked about the character and what his place in the comics is, but I’d say Gunn is doing something very different than what we’re used to seeing so he wants Rooker to be a clean slate. It sounds like we might be seeing more of Yondu as well. They definitely have the look down at least. Yondu‘s mohawk could a little larger and brighter when everything is said and done, but even if it isn’t everything looks pretty great. What do you think about Rooker‘s comments?
