May the Fourth Be With You? How Cliche!
As I was prepping myself for work this morning, pampering myself with my manly-man products, I heard a promo being run on a local radio station where they were going to give away two front row tickets to the ReAL Salt Lake soccer game this Saturday night. The station gave away the tickets to the winner of what was a rather sad Wookie impersonation contest. Granted, what I heard was people creating these lovely noises through a phone that was then transmitted over the air, but it sounded like someone had trapped a moose in a bear trap and was methodically torturing the poor animal. The morning show folks on the radio then proceeded to explain the goings on at Rio Tinto Stadium, where the ReAL play. Being that this Saturday is May 4th, there would be a celebration of sorts, highlight the rather geekish saying based on the date: May the Fourth Be With You. Fans are encouraged to dress up as their favorite Star Wars characters, which means well see numerous random Jedi’s, a Princess Leia or two and that one guy that goes all out and scares on-lookers.
Now, I may sound a tad bitter about this whole thing, but I’m not. What this day does is allow geeks, nerds and fans to have a bit of a celebration of sorts, giving us a day all our own to do our thing. Sure we have comic and sci-fi conventions, but this one is legit! It’s on everyone’s calendar, like Christmas and the 4th of July! This year, we, as Star Wars fans, have a bit more to celebrate. As you read this, there is a brand new film being written, with numerous others in the works. Fan-favorite JJ Abrams will be at the helm of this new film, which brings new hope (pun intended) to the franchise after the last few films left a bad taste in out mouth. Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford are slated to come back in some fashion as well. Not only that, but we’ll be getting a new film based in the Star Wars universe every years starting in 2015. It’s a good time to be a Star Wars fan! I think.
This year, however, brings something even more awesome. May the Fourth also happens to be FREE COMIC BOOK DAY, which always falls on the first Saturday in May. What is FREE COMIC BOOK DAY you ask? Well, it’s just like it sounds, participating comic book stores will be giving away free comic books. How is that not awesome? If you want more information about this kick-ass day, check out THIS ARTICLE that our very own Agent Burgos put together, which shows you the comics you may be able to get your hands on and where you can get them! Guess, what…one of them is Star Wars!
So nerds, geeks, fanboys and fan girls, this Saturday is our day! Put on your favorite comic book shirt, or wear your Storm Trooper helmet to go shopping at Target; or better yet, your local comic book store. And if anyone gives you crap, just smile, give them the one-finger salute and say “ecks said I could!”
May the Fourth Be With You, Snootchie Bootchies!
