There’s a few interesting tidbits hitting the web today concerning upcoming Marvel flicks. We’ve combined the teasers and rumors concerning Avengers 2, Doctor Strange, and Guardians of the Galaxy into one convenient article. First up is Marvel’s main man Kevin Feige teasing Avengers 2 and Doctor Strange in an interview featured in today’s issue of SFX (via Collider).
Feige commented on Joss Whedon‘s comment that Avengers 2 will “go deeper, not bigger” in terms of storytelling. He says that it will be similar to Iron Man 3 and how they didn’t try to just make it bigger and throw more monsters and villains in. It will be a story exploring the characters and how they interact. He added:
Almost whatever the heck else is happening is gravy in that franchise, because all I care about is Bruce and Tony, Tony and Steve, Widow and Bruce – and how Thor fits into it, because he’s always the outsider amongst outsiders. So I think that’s where the value lies. And going deeper amongst those characters in those relationships.
Feige also teased that there may be some new team members the next time we see The Avengers assemble. Staying coy, he said “I think it’s not a secret that Joss and I and all of us at Marvel think that part of the fun of Avengers is the rotating team, for sure [laughs].”
While he may not be in The Avengers 2, one of the next new characters to hit the Marvel Universe will be Doctor Strange. Feige went on to address how Strange and magic will play in the film universe. He says he’s not looking at Phase 3 as the “magic” phase though:
I’m not looking at Phase One as grounded and Phase Two as cosmic and Phase 3 as magic. The films are all so eclectic and different from each other that you can’t overarchingly categorize them like that. If and when we enter the magic arena, it will be through Doctor Strange. Sure, obviously. And that’s to me what’s exciting about Doctor Strange.
Last, but certainly not least, is a pretty juicy rumor about James Gunn‘s Guardians of the Galaxy. Harry Knowles at Ain’t It Cool News received word that Marvel’s intergalactic police force, the Nova Corps, will be popping up in the film in some capacity. This is a rumor we’ve heard before, people were saying they saw Nova ships in the Guardians of the Galaxy art shown off when the movie was announced. This is the first time we’ve heard it from a pretty solid source though. Says Knowles:
Late yesterday I was contacted by a source instructing me to call him, The Moffballs, telling me that after they had a dinner with a friend that is a confirmed part of GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY’s production team, that the friend let it slip over the meal that NOVA CORPS were definitely a part of the movie.
If you’re not familiar with the Nova Corps, Marvel is trying to get you up to speed as both Guardians and Nova have become focal point titles in the next wave of Marvel NOW! titles. Older fans probably know Richard Rider as Nova, while newer fans and viewers of the Ultimate Spider-Man cartoon only know the Sam Alexander version. It’s too early to tell at this stage which we’ll be seeing. I mean other than knowing who Star-Lord is, we don’t know any of the main casting for the film. Regardless, it seems like a safe bet that Nova will show up in some form or fashion. What do you think?
