Marc Webb Teases Big Things For Spider-Man 4; Talks Briefly About The Sequel’s Villains
Comic-Con kicked off today, but a lot of the movie panels we’re looking forward to the most don’t take place until tomorrow afternoon and Saturday morning. One of the bigger panels taking place tomorrow will be Sony‘s presentation for The Amazing Spider-Man 2. We got a quick glimpse of some Electro footage from the sequel yesterday (click here if you missed it), but the panel tomorrow promises more big surprises. Ahead of the big presentation, director Marc Webb spoke with the folks over at Movies.Com about the sequel and beyond.
Webb was surprisingly open with interviewer Erik Davis about the film and what the future will hold for the Spider-Man franchise, but he did hold a few things back for tomorrow. One of the more interesting little tidbits he talked about was Sony‘s recent announcement that there would be four films instead of the originally planned three. Webb admitted that the fourth one was a surprise to him, he’d always thought it would be a trilogy. He did say that there will be elements from the second and third films that will expand outside the Spider-Man universe and that could well be the basis of the fourth outing. That’s an interesting thought. Webb went on to talk more about that, and Davis points out in his article that it felt like Webb was giving off an Avengers-like vibe and could have been hinting at a big team-up movie with other characters Sony owns (transcription via CBM):
There’s always been a plan to extend this universe. To make a series of films that were interrelated and weren’t purely episodic. That there were certain ongoing stories that were going to play out over multiple films. So, that’s always been in the works and there’s been some early talks about the nature of what those next two movies are. It’s too early to talk about too many of the details, but if you pay attention to this film that’s coming out, you may get a feeling and sense of what’s to come in the future.
Webb wouldn’t comment on whether or not he would direct the fourth film. Since we knew he had planned a trilogy, it’s pretty safe to assume he’ll direct number three at the least. After teasing Electro and the destruction we’ll see in Times Square, Webb answered some fan questions. One person asked if we would see Paul Giamatti‘s Rhino with horns, to which the director simply replied “yes.” He gave the same answer with the same tone to the next question that asked if Sharknado would be a villain in the film. Take that for what you will. You can listen to the full interview below to hear all the director had to say. He gives a great answer as to why Spider-Man has such great villains. Warning: The volume is incredibly low on the first question, but it picks up after that. What do you think about what Webb had to say? Should they be so confident about a fourth movie already considering the second one isn’t even out yet?
