Today it was announced that legendary Philippine comic book artist Tony DeZuñiga has passed away at age 71.
DeZuñiga was the first of many Filipino artists that were brought over to the states by DC in the 1960s to gain major acceptance. He is also Co-Creator of Jonah Hex and the first Black Orchid. Not only did he work at DC but also did work on Marvel titles such as Spider-Man and X-Men. After he retired for drawing comics he did freelance work for TSR’s Dungeon and Dragons and did freelance painting.
“The brain was swollen so they need to take the pressure out so they need to insert a tube to release the pressure, but since I don’t want them to open up it created an hernia,”
“RIP Tony DeZuniga, amazing Filipino artist. The 1st to crack the US & the 1st artist of Black Orchid,”
“Rest in peace Tony De Zuniga.A proud Filipino comic book creator. Eternal rest grant upon him, o Lord.”“Thank you to all the support. We saw how the world loves him so much.”
“And while our conventions may seem empty now without him, as if something would always be missing, his memory will help keep us going, and keep us making comics,”
Fans and comics creators had banded together to help raise money for DeZuniga’s mounting hospital bills, selling sketches and t-shirts during Free Comic Book Day last weekend.
