Karl Urban Says The DREDD Team Is Working Hard To Make A Sequel Actually Happen

dreddDredd 3D is a movie that did well with fans and critics alike, but it didn’t score big at the box office. The positive buzz and word of mouth way back in 2012 just wasn’t enough to bring in the money required to assure a sequel would happen. Since the film’s release, home video sales and fan campaigns to get a sequel made have been able to turn the film into something of a cult-classic (though it’s hard to call something two years ago ‘classic‘). It seems the noise being made online is being heard loud and clear by cast and crew of the film. Karl Urban has said many times he’s love to put on the helmet and scowl again, but now he gives fans another glimmer of hope for a sequel.

The 2000AD YouTube page posted a special message Urban recorded while appearing at this weekend’s Emerald City Comic Con. The video is in response to the Dredd sequel petition passing the 100,000 signatures mark. Urban tells fans:

Hey Dredd fans, I’m Karl Urban. I just wanted to take this opportunity to thank you for your ongoing support and very hard work with the petitioin. I just want to say on behalf of everybody involved with the film Dredd from Alex Garland to the DNA boys to myself we really, really appreciate it and we’re working very, very hard to bring you Dredd 2. So thank you so much and please, please continue to support because it really does help.

A sequel still seems unlikely as of right now, but if people keep making noise and Urban and company remain interested in the project, it could happen sometime in the future. Stranger things have happened in the world of movies. What do you think about Urban‘s message? Are you still holding out hope for Dredd 2?
