Karen Gillan Talks GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY And Her ‘Big Girlie Fight Sequence’
With the release of the first trailer for Marvel and James Gunn‘s Guardians of the Galaxy, we’ve been hearing a lot more about the highly anticipated cosmic adventure. We’ seen some special featurettes for each of the Guardians and have heard a few words from James Gunn himself, but we haven’t been hearing an awful lot about the film’s female villain- Nebula. Former Doctor Who companion Karen Gillan famously shaved her ginger locks for the film and made a huge splash at Comic Con. The teaser footage released at Comic Con featured Nebula, but it was not Gillan. It was a stand in so the shot could be completed. The trailer gave us our first look at Gillan and it teased a big fight scene between her and Gamora (Zoe Saldana). While at SXSW this weekend, MTV caught up with the actress and asked her about her big role.
Speaking with Josh Horowitz about her new film Oculus, Gillan was asked about her Marvel work and if she thinks Gurdians is as big of a risk as some people make it out to be. The actress has total faith in the project, but she does understand that it’s something not a whole lot of people are familiar with:
I always had total faith in the project, because the people who are making it are so brilliant, and have a long history of great films. So I knew it was in great hands. By the same token, it’s a brand new franchise. Nobody knows the comic as well as say Spider-Man or something like that, so it was like we were totally establishing something. I just think it’s a new direction for Marvel, it’s really, really funny. It’s not taking itself seriously at all. It’s tongue in cheek. And just to see people be excited about that new tone is really cool.
Nebula is a big, bald assassin who will be dogging the Guardians throughout the film in addition to Lee Pace‘s Ronan the Accuser. We will probably see a lot of Gillan in the film since she has been billed as villain #2 in an expansive cast of rogues. When asked if Nebula had a sense of humor, Gillan says she finds the character hilarious but she’s not going to be cracking jokes in the film. She told the site “Okay, so Nebula does not find herself funny. I find her hilarious, but she can’t find herself hilarious. That’s not scary.“
And as to the big fight scene between herself and Zoe Saldana, Gillan says it’s a girlie fight scene though it’s not “girlie” in the sense you might be thinking. She explained:
Yeah, there’s a big girlie fight sequence, but it’s not that girlie. They made sure there weren’t any nice pirouettes or anything like that.
[Zoe is] really experienced in the physical stuff, she was a ballerina. She’s really amazing at all of that stuff. She barely required any rehearsal, she was like, ‘I can do this.’ I required two months of rehearsals every day that I wasn’t shooting, because I looked like spaghetti when I started.
I think there is…like a few different [fight scenes]. This is the integral one for my character, because it’s not just a physical battle. Their relationship goes very deep, and there’s a huge history between them. So there’s a lot more to it than just the physical.
Gillan played a good girl with a little bit of an edge in Doctor Who, so it will be interesting to see what she does with a full-on villain role. The big space adventure is old hat to the actress, so it seems like she has really cut loose and adapted to the project really well. We’ll have to wait until August 1st to see just how menacing she really is. What do you think about Gillan‘s comments?
