This July Skottie Young Will Let Loose With Both Barrels In A ROCKET RACCOON Ongoing
This truly will be the year of Guardians of the Galaxy. There’s a movie coming out later this year from James Gunn featuring the universe’s most ragtag band of superheroes, Brian Michael Bendis has rejuvenated the comic book side of things, DnA are coming in for a comic book movie prequel, and now fan-favorite artist Skottie Young will be working on a Rocket Raccoon solo series. Launching in July before the release of the movie, Young will write and draw a new ongoing series focusing on everyone’s favorite gun-totting raccoon.
MTV had the announcement about the new series earlier today. Young didn’t want to reveal much story-wise because he said even talking about the first three pages would spoil something fun. He would confirm that Groot, while not on EVERY page, will be a part of the series as well. The writer of Marvel‘s Oz series talked about his love of Rocket and what sort of vibe his new series will be aiming for:
Even though it was just a sliver of Rocket [in the trailer], I couldn’t wait to work on this guy even more. think it’s going to have a connection to that nostalgic feeling for ‘Looney Tunes,’ that old animated flavor where everything wasn’t squeaky clean, you know? Daffy Duck would get his bill blasted off with double barrel shotguns… That’s what I grew up watching, and being able to play around with that in this hyper-superhero intergalactic universe will be a lot of fun
Young is known for his more kid-friendly comics and beautiful variant covers, but he wants to assure readers this isn’t going to be a book just for the kiddies. He told the site “I’m not going to go crazy where we’re going to go extremely vulgar or anything, but I did want to play with a bit of that edge. If you have a character that carries a big gun, a ridiculously, cartoonishly big gun you’ve got to be willing to shoot it. If you do feel MAX [Marvel’s adults only line], right away you’re going to get smacked upside with a little laugh. I don’t think you’ll see any raccoon private parts or anything like that.” You can see the stunning cover and a few preview pages from the first issue featuring Rocket at an intergalactic MMA fight below. What do you think about Young taking on a monthly series? Will you be checking this one out?

As defenders of the cosmos go, Rocket Raccoon has faced his fair share of galactic battles. He’s been a hero to the weak, a champion of good, a protector of the innocent, a heartthrob to the many intergalactic female species and now–a raccoon on the run?! ( I’m sorry, I’m sorry, a “formidable-and-expert-Guardian” on the run. Rocket is NOT a raccoon, okay?) Rocket’s high-flying life of adventure and heroism may soon be a thing of the past when he becomes a wanted man–and the authorities are not the only one on his TAIL! (We’ll definitely be overusing that pun!) Superstar creator Skottie Young brings his A-game as writer and artist on the series we’ve been waiting decades for.
