Joss Whedon Talks James Gunn’s Guardians Of The Galaxy

Marvel had been saying that they wanted to go galactic in the next phase of their movie universe, and they certainly will with the surprising choice of making a Guardians of the Galaxy movie. At Comic Con this year they announced that Star Lord, Drax, Gamora, and Rocket Racoon will be making their way onto the big screen courtesy of James Gunn. Joss Whedon, who was locked in for 3 years at Marvel as director and writer of Avengers 2 as well as being a creative consultant for the Phase 2 movies, talked with MTV about  Guardians and why it would work. Whedon said two words show why Guardians will work well- James Gunn.

James is what makes me think it will work. I myself was sort of like, ‘Well, I liked Rocket Raccoon as a kid, but I’m not sure how that plays [to a wider audience].’ And then they said, ‘Well, we’re thinking about using James Gunn.’ And I said, ‘Oh, then no, you’re fine.’ He is so off the wall, and so crazy, but so smart, such a craftsman and he builds from his heart. He loves the raccoon. Needs the raccoon. This is the guy who wrote ‘The Specials.’ People don’t understand how influential that movie was about heroes, about taking heroes and making them mundane. And [he directed] Super.

Whedon went on to say that Gunn has just started on the script, but he has a take on the film and the Guardians that will really please fans.

He has a very twisted take on it, but it all comes from a real love for the material. It’s going to be hard for the humans to keep up. I know he’s going to come from left field and I’m going to go, ‘What?’ And then, ‘Of course, why didn’t I think of that?’ And then I’m going to beat him!

It seems like Whedon is very excited about Guardians and will let Gunn have relatively free reign over the script. If Avengers taught us anything, it’s that we should completely trust what Whedon does creatively. Gunn seems like an odd choice for an even odder film, but Whedon was an odd choice the time it was announced. What do you think of the Guardians movie? Can a talking Raccoon work with all the other Marvel films?
