Joshua Fialkov Left DC Because They Told Him To Kill John Stewart

Yesterday saw Andy Diggle and Joshua Hale Fialkov leaving their new DC comics before they even debuted. The two writers split due to “professional reasons and “creative differences.” Today we’ve learned a little about what those “creative differences” were. Bleeding Cool is reporting, and ComicBookResources have confirmed, that Faialkov stepped away from DC because they put out a hit on John Stewart.
Fialkov took to his personal website to talk about the departure:
Just a quick note to confirm what everyone knows, I am no longer the writer of GLC and Red Lanterns for DC Comics. There were editorial decisions about the direction of the book that conflicted with the story I was hired to tell, and I felt that it was better to let DC tell their story the way they want. I’m grateful for the opportunity and I’ll miss working with the entire Green Lantern team.
This was not an easy decision to make emotionally or financially, but, I’m sure it was the right decision for both me, and for the Green Lantern books. The outpouring of support, your kind words and well wishes means so much to me and my family.
In the meantime, I’ll be writing ALPHA: BIG TIME and THE ULTIMATES over at Marvel, and THE DEVILLERS at Dynamite. I’ve got a couple more projects in the works, so stay tuned.
BleedingCool reported today that the “editorial decisions” about the direction of the book was a DC mandate that John Stewart, Green Lantern and one of the few African-American characters, had to go. DC had said a few months ago at their recent creative summit that once a story was approved, editorial wouldn’t change major story points. Apparently Fialkov was told that he had to change his story to include John Stewart being killed off. Fialkov wanted no part of it, so he left. Fialkov is out, but the story may not be. The new team put in place after his departure may well have to continue on with this plan. That plan could of course change if there was enough of a fuss from the internet. To borrow from another comic book – Now you know, and knowing is half the battle!

They better not kill John Stewart. From what I’ve been reading since DC started the New 52, I’d say 40% is solid and 60% of their titles are still trying to find consistent story-telling.
Consistency at the New 52? Haha, not with all the changes that seem to be happening every other month. The only constant thing at DC is Bob Harras is going to do what he wants regardless of what any fan thinks.
