Josh Trank’s FANTASTIC FOUR Will Feature ‘Found Footage’ Style

Josh Trank’s surprise hit, Chronicle, has many elements that made it so popular. It was a unique take on the “special powers’ concept that stepped outside the typical comic book movie, as well as adding the real world element of “what if?” that caused people to essentially choose a side. One bit that really made it stand out was the fact that Trank opted for a completely found footage style. Many have tried this technique and most have failed. Those that have succeeded, such as The Blair Witch Project and the original Paranormal Activity, have one thing in common: they are horror films. The style tends to create a sense of urgency and panic, but when dropped in a more dramatic film, such as Chronicle, it offers up a whole new perspective.

When it was announced that Trank would be taking on the first family of Marvel comics, many wondered if that style would be used. It was a safe bet to say yes, that Trank would incorporate the hand-held camera into the film, and it looks as though that will be the case. Fox Studios President of Production, Emma Watts, sat down with THR to discuss the studio’s current and future film slate and the Fantastic Four reboot was eventually discussed. When asked whether Trank would use the found footage style, Watts confirmed that he would, as that’s his signature.

It’s Josh, so it can’t not have that feel. That’s his talent, that’s what he does, and that’s what excites him about it. It is a really interesting young cast [Michael B. Jordan, Miles Teller, Kate Mara and Jamie Bell], and he is the magnet that’s brought them all together.

Now, I wouldn’t expect to see the whole movie filmed on a GoPro or an Android, but what I think will happen could be compared to the popular Bourne films that Paul Greengrass made popular. Essentially, expect to see a lot of the hand-held cameras being used. Or, as some folks call it, shaky cam. This is the quickest and easiest way to ground a film, which is one of the things that many people attached to the project have promised: a much more grounded and gritty film than we’ve seen in the past. That doesn’t mean, however, that Trank won’t use videos captured on an iPhone though.

Fantastic Four will star Miles Teller, Michael B. Jordan, Kate Mara, Jamie Bell, Tim Blake Nelson and Toby Kebbell and will fly into theaters June 2015. Fox go-to scribe Simon Kinberg penned the script for the movie, which is currently filming.
