This Johnny Depp/Marvel Situation Is Getting Strange

Johnny_Depp_by_NachanUnless less you’ve been living under a rock in the non-nerd world, then you’ve probably heard that rumor that surfaced last night regarding Johnny Depp being in some form of talks to take on the titular role in Marvel’s upcoming adaptation of Doctor Strange. I won’t get into my personal feeling right now- you can actually read all about that by CLICKING HERE– but things are taking some really odd turns this afternoon.

After the interwebs took the rumor and ran with it, there have been a few new developments in the story. Initially, Variety confirmed Latino Review‘s original scoop, saying that Marvel was in early talks to take on the role. Shortly afterwards, however, the trade re-worded their article to essentially reiterate what we already knew from the original scoop, saying that the filming of the fifth Pirates of the Caribbean film could pose a problem.

Naturally, and is Marvel tradition, they have denied the news, saying that it is all false and that talks to cast the role haven’t even begun at this point. But let’s rewind to December when they, and Paul Rudd, both denied that talks were taking place for Ant-Man. Only to have the studio drop the news that Rudd had officially signed on for the film. Point being: they really can be trusted when they deny something.

Then we have the numerous tweets from Borys Kit of Heat Vision, who dropped a bit more news on the project. You can read the tweets below, but what he says is that the script that was completed by Thomas Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer wouldn’t be used and that Marvel is looking for new writers to completely start over. Now, LR’s scoop last night did say that Marvel would be willing to tweak their current script to accommodate Depp’s age, which is 49, rather that the 30 years old they had originally written. Are these two news bits connected? Who knows at this point.

We’ll be sure to keep an eye on this one for it, as it’s sure to be an interesting topic to follow in the future. In the mean time, what do you think of the idea of Johnny Depp playing Doctor Strange? Did you have someone else in mind for the role?
