JJ Abrams Said Thanks, But No Thanks To Star Wars VII

JJ Abrams had the possibility to hold more nerd power than any person in the history of fandom. The director of the upcoming Star Trek Into Darkness revealed in an interview with Empire magazine that there were discussions about him helming Star Wars Episode VII. The director had his own reasons for turning the project down. Here is the important part of the interview by way of Bleeding Cool’s image from the iPad version of the magazine.
If he would have taken the job, it would have been a real possibility that a Wars and Trek movie could have faced off with each other around the same time, causing quite the conflict of interest. The choice of Abrams is a little odd given he has the whole Trek thing going, but maybe they were just trying to bring the two fandoms together in peace and harmony. What do you think? Would you have been OK with Abrams holding all the nerd power?
