Jason Momoa Talks About His GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Audition
Before WWE superstar Dave Batista landed the role of Drax the Destroyer in Marvel and James Gunn‘s Guardians of the Galaxy, it looked like Game of Thrones and Conan the Barbarian star Jason Momoa had got the job. Rumors started circulating that Momoa wanted too much money and that caused things fell through. Whether or not that’s true, we know that things didn’t work out for some reason or another. While promoting his new Sundance Channel drama The Red Road, the actor talked about his Guardians audition and why things didn’t work out.
Speaking with Zap2It, Momoa says that he thought the role of Drax wasn’t right for him since it’s too similar to what he did on Stargate: Atlantis. He does think Batista is a perfect fit for the role though:
I think it’s perfectly cast. Dave is perfect for that role, for Drax. It didn’t really fit in my time because I’ve done so many things where I don’t say much and I’m colored up and I have my shirt off again. I made a conscious choice to turn down some movies that were action-based to direct ‘Road to Paloma’ so people could see that side.
I want my children to see their father happy. It’s not that it’s not a good role, it just wasn’t the right thing. I was on ‘Stargate: Atlantis’ for four years playing a similar character called Ronon, who was an alien who didn’t say much and grunted. I’ve been there and done that, whether people have seen it or not. You want to stretch.
Things apparently did get pretty far along in the casting process before Momoa passed on the role. His audition took place with Star-Lord himself, Chris Pratt. That type of audition doesn’t usually happen unless things are serious. The actor recalled the audition process with Pratt, whom he says can ‘act circles‘ around him:
One of the funnest auditions I’ve ever done in my life was with him. He’s phenomenal. He’s going to kill it. It’s going to be amazing. It’s a whole Han Solo vibe. It’s going to be a phenomenal movie. I’m glad that he is the lead of that. He’s funny as hell, man. He can improv; he just acts circles around me. It was really, really fantastic.
Regardless of how things may or may not have went down, it sounds like Momoa has nothing but good feelings toward Guardians and Batista. The actor wanted to assure folks that just because this comic book movie didn’t work out that he hasn’t sworn off all comic book movies in the future. Momoa says there are actually several characters he would love to play since he’s an admitted comic book fan, but he wouldn’t say who his favorite characters are because that would give away the roles he’d like to have. There are still persistent rumors Momoa is being eyed for Batman vs. Superman, so that could be one reason he’s remaining tight lipped. We’ll just have to wait and see whether Momoa ends up with Marvel or DC. What do you think about the actor’s comments?
