James Gunn Confirms Ronan The Accuser Will Be Kree
To say that Marvel is taking a gamble in basing a film on their Guardians of the Galaxy property is a bit of an understatement. So far, the films that the studio has produced have been a huge success, creating a franchise of films like no other. But what makes this one so different is that we are headed to a realm that is is somewhat untouched for Marvel Studios. Sure, Thor and it’s upcoming sequel have taken fans to a new realm, but with Guardians, we are looking at alien races, taking what helped make The Avengers so huge and expanding on the idea. Oh, and let’s not forget the weapon-laden raccoon and a talking tree.
One of the characters that many fans are anticipated is the incredibly threatening Ronan The Accuser, who will be played by Lee Pace. Not surprisingly, there are a lot of unanswered questions surrounding this film and one of them is regarding Ronan and his background. In a Q&A session held on James Gunn’s FormSpring page, the director answered many questions from fans, one of which asked whether or not Ronan would be Kree.
Q: Is Ronan going to be Kree in Guardians of the Galaxy?
A: As Lee Pace said at SDCC, Ronan is ‘a very complicated Kree.’
As he mentions, Lee Pace said the character would be Kree, but this gives us confirmation. This may not be massive news, but it may mean that Gunn will be cracking this “galactic” thing open more than we had thought. Could this mean that we could see more of the Kree and the Skrull and some of Marvel’s most popular story lines be translated to film? That’s something we will have to hold off on until we get further into Marvel’s future films. James Gunn also states that filming is now over half way completed and that Thanos will be more than just a pretty face, as seen in the mid-credits scene of The Avengers. The big pink baddie will have a speaking role in the film, but we don’t know juts how big of a role Thanos will have in Guardians, so we’ll have to wait and see how this plays out.
Guardians of the Galaxy will be bringing Marvel’s Phase 2 to a close when it hits theaters next summer. Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Lee Pace, Bradley Cooper, Karen Gillan, Benicio Del Toro, Michael Rooker, John C. Reilly, Glenn Close and Djimon Honsou all star in the film. Gunn also confirmed, via his Twitter account, that some of his regulars will be joining the film in some capacity, so expect the likes of Stephen Blackehart and Sean Gunn to show up in some fashion.
