It’s All But Official Now: Vin Diesel Talks About Voicing Groot In Guardians Of The Galaxy

guardians-of-the-galaxy-concept-art-finalVin Diesel has been using his social media accounts to tease an upcoming project with Marvel for the past few months. The actor hinted and several roles and people started to expect characters like Vision, Thanos, and Groot. In one interview, the actor revealed that his talks could have involved a love story for a comic book film much like his relationship in the Fast and Furious films. The other day, the actor posted a picture of Groot on his Facebook account and now he’s essentially confirmed he is indeed voicing the giant wooden Guardian of the Galaxy.

grootHero Complex just posted an interview with the actor that took place after a Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. luncheon today where the tough guy actor talked about why he agreed to voicing a character who only says three words- “I Am Groot

I’m an actor. I can do whatever the f*** I want. As an actor, not everything has to be the most obvious choice. And sometimes, the best thing you can do — as far as Steven Spielberg and his advice — is to defy expectations. So if everybody thinks you’re going to go for this one thing and you flip it entirely and go for the strangest Marvel character, it’s interesting. And when something is interesting, it’s inspiring.

Diesel has been very talkative about his role and teased reporters and fans mercilessly at Comic-Con about what it could be. That’s a stark contrast to Marvel Studios style of complete secrecy. Diesel was asked if he’s gotten in trouble with the Marvel assassins with his chattiness:

The last thing they are is mad. I’m pretty open, but I have been secretive about this. I went to Comic-Con and I got blasted while I was on the Hall H panel for “Riddick.” Someone asked a Marvel question. I couldn’t say anything because of that secrecy.

vin dieselAt the aforementioned Comic-Con, Diesel was talking about Marvel wanting to explore a love story with him much like Dom and Letty in Fast and Furious. I don’t think Groot will fall in love with a hot little shrub, so he probably talked to them about some other possible roles during his meeting. This quote seems to confirm it. Here’s what the actor said when asked about the film passing the halfway mark for filming:

That’s the thing — I’m so busy. The audience wanted Vin and Marvel, Vin and Marvel. But I’m too busy to do a six-month role. So what Marvel came up with was really interesting. … I am watching a social wave influence and in some ways guide their thinking.

You can read a little more from Diesel and how he thinks social media and his fans helped him get his foot in the Marvel door by clicking here. While the ink may not be dry on the contracts, it does seem like Vin Diesel will indeed be voicing  Rocket Racoons’ wooden pal Groot. Speaking of that  rascally raccoon, he’s the only piece of the Guardians of the Galaxy puzzle left. What do you think about Vin voicing Groot? Keep in mind he has some voice work experience with The Iron Giant.
