UPDATE: He Is GROOT: James Gunn Finally Makes Vin Diesel’s GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Casting Official
After nearly a year of rumors and speculation, James Gunn and Vin Diesel have made official what we pretty much knew already- Vin Diesel is playing Groot. The news was made about as official as official can be as Gunn shared a picture of Groot and Diesel, along with a few words, on his Facebook page.
As you can see in the picture below, the two wooden dudes feature equally dead, glassy, yet intimidating gazes that pierce into your very soul. I have to give the edge to Diesel though. I don’t see how you can’t look at that picture and be shaken to your core as you realize Groot is the role the actor was born to play. Gunn then took to the comments of his Facebook post to reveal a few details.
First up from Gunn was what exactly that stunning Groot bust was. Said the director, “This was the bust we used for reference when shooting. It has changed slightly from this since we started animating him.” When asked if this was ‘official‘ confirmation for Groot, Gunn said he hopped so because he had already spent a lot of time recording Diesel. He added on the lack of the actor getting a Marvel press release and the like, “He was never announced. He said he wanted to do it and we said we were talking to him. Everything else was people guessing and thinking they knew what was going to happen. Also I hope this puts to rest all the silly Thanos-Vin stuff which people just seemed to make up out of nothing.” Emphasis on the Thanos/Diesel bit is my own. So there we go. The entire roster for the Guardians has been filled. The one person we know plays an important role that we still haven’t heard anything about yet is Thanos. Hopefully we hear some casting news on the big guy early in the New Year. So for about the 15th time, Diesel is connected to Groot, but this is a more official channel. What do you think about the new pic?
UPDATE: Marvel put out a press release, continuing the trend of confirming what has already been confirmed.
