Haden Blackman Takes Over Writing Duties On ELEKTRA From Zeb Wells
One of the new Marvel NOW! phase two books that got a lot of people’s attention was Elektra. The series following Marvel‘s deadliest femme fatale was announced with the team of writer Zeb Wells and artist Mike Del Mundo. The premise of the book was described as Elektra becoming the “Dexter of assassins.” While it was originally supposed to premiere in May, there has been a slight change of plans. The book is getting pushed back one month because a new writer has to come aboard.
While speaking with CBR for his weekly Axel-In-Charge feature, Marvel EIC Axel Alonso touched on all the new artists we’ll be seeing with the upcoming wave of fresh #1 titles. After praising Del Mundo‘s character work and layouts on Elektra, Alonso revealed that the book would be held a month to allow a new writer to come in. Wells had to back out due to some new television commitments, but he left the series in some very capable hands:
Zeb Wells: Anyone who knows me knows this book has been a dream of mine since I started writing comics ten years ago. Unfortunately, after Steve moved heaven and earth to make the book happen, commitments in television won’t allow me the time to craft it with the care it deserves.
So I had to make the heartbreaking decision to walk away, and Steve and Sana had to make the less-heartbreaking decision to replace me with someone twice as talented: Haden Blackman of “Batwoman” fame.
It’s a surreal feeling to be this excited for a book I wanted to be writing so badly, but I can’t wait to get it at my comics store in April. And I want to thank everyone at Marvel for being understanding about the whole situation. Hopefully, I’ll be back at Marvel soon with a new project when my schedule opens up.
Alonso: So there you go. We’re obviously sad to see Zeb go, but happy for his opportunities out in TV land. The good news for readers is that Haden’s sizzling pitch makes me and the editors confident that the character is in terrific hands. Haden’s done some terrific work across town, but I think “Elektra” will send his name skyrocketing. And because you’ve been so patient, here is a sneak peek at some of the breathtaking work Mike Del Mundo has been up to in the meantime.
Former Batwoman write Haden Blackman will now be tacking on a much more violent and dangerous lady than the female caped crusader. While Wells teased fans with his plans in several interviews and it’s very sad to see him go and not carry out his original story, having Blackman come in and guide the ship is a very tantalizing prospect. Some of Del Mundo‘s concept art was also revealed in the interview. What do you think about Blackman coming onto the title? Is that worth the extra month’s wait to you?
