Frank Grillo Teases The Rise Of Crossbones In The MARVEL Cinematic Universe
Captain America: The Winter Soldier was a movie full of stand-out performances, but one that really stood out and surprised fans (both hardcore comic readers and the general audience) was Frank Grillo‘s turn as Brock Rumlow, the man that will become the deadly Crossbones. The S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent-turned-Hydra sleeper agent went toe-to-toe with Falcon (Anthony Mackie) and then had a building dropped on top of him. He didn’t die, but he was in pretty rough shape when he was wheeled into the hospital at the end of the film. We all know that’s the super villain origin story for Crossbones, and in a recent interview with ScreenCrush, Grillo teased the rise of Crossbones and how he could pop up at any time in any Marvel film.
Before getting to the juicy stuff, Grillo discussed how happy he was to see fans respond to his interpretation of Rumlow in such a positive way. He says that actors live or die by the fans, and luckily he has the fans on his side:
I’m going to tell you something that is great about the fanboys. Once you get on their radar and they respect what you’re doing — you’re kind of living up to what they expect from you — it changes your life…Because the studios and the powers that be that create these movies, they listen to the fanboys. Kevin Feige is one of the biggest fanboys of all. He knows his shit. So, now I kind of have this little fanboy following that is getting bigger and bigger because I’m not doing anything stupid to disrespect the character.
Grillo did an excellent job on his own, but part of the reason fans are so excited about the appearance of Brock Rumlow is the possibilities for future storylines involving Crossbones. The character has some memorable appearances in Ed Brubaker‘s Captain America run, including the Death of Captain America. After confirming that he’ll be working on Captain America 3 after working on the American version of The Raid and a new TV series, Grillo teased Crossbones more comic book inspired duds. When asked if he would be suiting up in Cap 3, the actor would only say, “You know, they are so– I have to tell you…Yeah, his face is burned. If you read the comics about Crossbones, you know, Marvel always takes their interpretation of the comics. It’s exciting.“
Finally, while we’ll see Crossbones in Cap 3 for sure, there’s a real chance the big, bad, killer could show up elsewhere in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. When asked if he could be a character like Black Widow who pops up in all different kinds of movies, Grillo said that he could “show up in anything. He [Rumlow/Crossbones] could have his own thing. He could really have his own thing.” The actor thinks Crossbones could have his ‘own thing,’ so that could mean any number of things. He could have a cameo in another Marvel flick, he could team up with another baddie, or he could even have his own one-shot. Only time will tell where Crossbones will pop up next, but we know for a fact he’ll be back. What do you think about the actor’s comments?
