Frank Grillo Talks The Future Of BROCK RUMLOW/CROSSBONES
Captain America: The Winter Soldier was chock full of awesomeness. Few would find reason not to agree with me on that. The film was a great balance of comic book movie and spy thriller and offered up something completely new in regards to comic book adaptations that comes at a time when some feel the film world is being saturated with comic book movies. One aspect of the film that helped move it along so well was the inclusion of some cool characters, from Arnim Zola to Batroc to Brock Rumlow, played by Frank Grillo. Now, we know that Rumlow played a large role in the overall story in the film, in providing some pretty awesome action scenes, but it’s the future of this character that many people are curious about. Most of you will know that Rumlow eventually becomes Crossbones in the comics and judging by the look of his character at the end of The Winter Soldier, that very well could happen.
While chatting with Collider, Grillo was able to give a tiny bit of insight about the future of the character. Grillo, like many of the major players in the Marvel Cinematic Universe signed a multi-picture deal when he joined. Now, that doesn’t necessarily mean they will use him, but the option is there to bring him in. Grillo is optimistic about the character’s future in the Captain America world and that we’ll be seeing him again.
“I mean, I’m cautiously optimist that you will see me in the not too distant future in the next installment of Captain America. Very early on the Russos said, ‘Look, this is an origin film for this character. We’re gonna discover who this is and this is a big movie with a lot of moving parts, but we’re gonna discover you in this film and, you know, here’s the information about who Brock Rumlow turns into and blah, blah, blah.’ And so we’ve had multiple discussions about what comes after that, that thing. So, you know, it’s obvious Rumlow is covered in rubble and burned to crisp at the end, but you see he’s still there. They don’t do that for no reason.”
I have to agree with him on this one. They set this character up for more and I’d be shocked if they didn’t pursue that. Not to mention, Crossbones is a pretty bad-ass character and could provide for some great action sequences in the future. One of Crossbones’ most noticeable aspects is his costume, which features a skull and…you guessed it, crossbones. Grillo is very aware of this as well.
“He needs a costume! Coincidentally it could be a mask with a crossbones on it.”
In case you were wondering, I’m OK with all of this. Joe and Anthony Russo are in the process of putting together a script for the third Captain America film, so it may be while before we find out if Grillo will be returning. Meanwhile, Chris Evans is currently filming Avengers: Age of Ultron, so work on the next film is still a ways out. However, there is a release date set, which happens to be the exact same date as the highly anticipated and much-discussed Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice and neither studio is budging. A battle may be brewing folks!
On a side note, it should be mentioned that he revealed that he will be taking part in the upcoming American take on The Raid. For what role, he did not say, but he does expect to start work on that project, with director Patrick Hughes, this September.
