This year sees the release of a re-vamped Judge Dredd movie which so wants to distance itself from the 1995 Sly Stallone movie it’s going by the solitary and fearsome name of Dredd.
Four new stills, including a rather violent one, have appeared online for fans to get a look at. What do you reckon? Good… bad… meh?
The movie shot in South Africa last year and is going for a more gritty feel than the camp tone of Danny Cannon’s blockbuster.
DREDD takes us to the wild streets of Mega City One, the lone oasis of quasi-civilization on Cursed Earth. Judge Dredd (Karl Urban) is the most feared of elite Street Judges, with the power to enforce the law, sentence offenders and execute them on the spot – if necessary. The endlessly inventive mind of writer Alex Garland and the frenetic vision of director Peter Travis bring Dredd to life as a futuristic neo-noir action film that returns the celebrated character to the dark, visceral incarnation from John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra’s revered comic strip.
Peter Travis (Vantage Point) directs the film from a screenplay by Alex Garland, known from his script work on Danny Boyle‘s The Beach, Sunshine and 28 Days Later. It stars Karl Urban, Lena Headey, and Olivia Thirlby. It is expected to hit theaters on September 21, 2012.
