FEATURE: What To Expect From Lex Luthor In BATMAN VS SUPERMAN According To Zack Snyder And David Goyer

It was quite…too quiet for Warner Brothers liking. So they did the only logical thing, and dropped a bombshell on the world. They had cast their next Lex Luthor. Who was is? Was it one of the multiple already bald actors that had been mentioned by countless blogs and sites? Was it one of the actors that was somewhere around 20 years Man Of Steel star Henry Cavill’s senior? No. In one bold move, Warner Brothers threw out the play book on what conventional fanboys and girls wanted (which is the right move) and cast Jesse Eisenberg as the new Lex.

While we know who is playing Lex, we don’t really know what he is going to be about in this movie. Drew McWeeny over at HitFix had a fantastically written piece on how he thinks, and I agree, that Zack Snyder will bring the destruction from Man Of Steel full circle with Lex leading the charge for Superman to be brought to justice. This theory was even touched on by Snyder himself. “Maybe we’ll see the repercussions of that in the next film,” said Snyder who gave an estimate that probably around 5000 people died in the final battle between Zod and Superman.

Gone are the days of the Midwest real-estate wannabe mogul from the Richard Donner Superman films (which Goyer describes as fun). Our new Lex will be a suave, savvy business man that will have almost limitless resources. “This is a Bill Gates-like Lex that is probably worth 50, 60, 70 billion dollars. It’s a very different Lex,” Goyer explained. He also went on to say that their version of Lex is, “not a crook.” Snyder echoed Goyer’s remarks; but painted a little bit more of a vivid picture while talking with Yahoo. “I don’t know. I think you’d just have to imagine like a combination of, you know, Richard Branson and Brad Pit I guess,” Snyder joked.

Most comic purist know that Lex loves to play the alien card when it comes to Superman. His hatred burns deep for a being from another planet winning over the people of Earth with his heroics and inspired optimism.  Expect the alien angle to be brought up in Batman Vs. Superman when Lex makes his appearance. “At its core, Superman is an alien. He comes from an alien world … Lex loves to call him an alien,” said Snyder to Kevin Smith at the Man Of Steel Fan Event from late last year. I would imagine that Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) might be a little suspicious of Superman being an alien as well, but there has been no evidence to support this.

There have been multiple rumors floating out there ever since Eisenberg has been cast, but the one thing that most people will want to know is, will he be bald. A report from earlier this week suggests that he will indeed be bald, and to me if he’s not it’s a great disservice to the character. While Snyder and or Goyer haven’t said anything about the topic yet, both are comic book guys and I have the utmost faith that they will respect the comic mythos.

Wrapping up, with all the reports and rumors out there it’s hard to decipher myth from fact. The point of this little feature was to remind people what exactly we can expect from the mouth the film creators themselves.  As always things could change, but for now this is the only 100% concrete evidence that we have in regards to what Lex Luthor will be about. As always, make sure to check back here at Comic Book Therapy for the latest.
