FANTASTIC FOUR’s Josh Trank To Direct STAR WARS Spinoff; J.J. Abrams Put Set Pic Leakers In Check
Chronicle director Josh Trank is currently hard at work on rebooting the Fantastic Four for Fox, but he will soon be taking a trip to a galaxy far, far away. The official Star Wars website has just announced that Trank will be directing one of the upcoming stand-alone movies in the pipeline. The news comes hot off the heels of the announcement that Godzilla‘s Gareth Edwards would be tackling a spinoff film of his own.
The news comes as something of a surprise since Trank‘s name hasn’t really been attached to all the recent reports coming out of the spinoff rumor mill, but with Edwards‘ recent hiring it does make sense considering the type of directors Disney and Lucasfilm seem to be going after. While there isn’t even an inkling of what the movie may be about, you can read the full press release below:
In addition to the episodes of a new Star Wars trilogy, Lucasfilm and Disney continue development of multiple stand-alone movies that will offer new stories beyond the core Saga. The newest director to come on board is Josh Trank.
“We’re thrilled to welcome Josh into the family,” says Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy. “He is such an incredible talent and has a great imagination and sense of innovation. That makes him perfectly suited to Star Wars, and for this new slate of movies that reach beyond the core characters and storylines of Episodes I through IX.”
Trank states, “The magic of the Star Wars Universe defined my entire childhood. The opportunity to expand on that experience for future generations is the most incredible dream of all time.”
Trank captured imaginations worldwide with his critically lauded directorial debut Chronicle, a fresh and engaging take on the superhero genre. Trank is currently at work on The Fantastic Four for 20th Century Fox.
That’s not all the Star Wars news for today. J.J. Abrams used the Bad Robot Twitter account to send a message about all the leaked set pictures that have been popping up the last few days. It’s a funny note that shows that Abrams isn’t as concerned about his “mystery box” approach to movie making as he usually is. Star Wars fans will recognize the table Abrams‘s note has been set on. It’s the Dejarik board (holographic chess-like game) that Chewie and C-3PO used while playing a…friendly game…on the Millennium Falcon. What do you think about the Trank news? Are you surprised Abrams found a little humor in the recent string of leaks?
