Expect to See A Lot More of Black Widow in Avengers: Age of Ultron
Joss Whedon makes no secrets about the fact he likes to have strong female characters in his stories and The Avengers is no different. Scarlett Johansson has filled the role of Black Widow in two films now, Iron Man 2 and The Avengers. There are comic fans out there that feel she and Hawkeye need to be replaced with Hank Pym and his cohort Janet Van Dyne/Pym for future films. I’m not a part of that group, as I think Jeremy Renner and Scarlett Johansson do a fine job in their respective roles, we just need to see more of what they can do. While I can’t say much on Hawkeye at this time, I can tell you that Joss Whedon has big plans for Widow in the upcoming Avengers: Age of Ultron.
While speaking at a Nerd HQ Q&A (via MTV), Whedon discusses the difference between Widow and the other characters in Avengers and how it plays to her advantage. Not to mention, we’ll be seeing a lot more of the character.
“Natasha is a huge part of the sequel because you do want to concentrate on the people who don’t have their own franchises. Although she in ‘Cap 2,’ [and] she’s great. She was the most fun for me because she’s not a hero, you know, and it’s something that I read—and I feel bad that I can’t remember who wrote the book—but it’s in one of the books explaining, ‘These guys are heroes, you are a spy. It’s a different thing—it’s a different skill set—and you don’t have their moral high ground or any of that good stuff.’ And that just makes her so interesting to me. So yeah, the stuff I’ve got going on with her in the second one is killer.”
As you can see, he has big plans for the character. I’m hoping we’ll get a bit more backstory on her character. According to multiple sources, Whedon also has more in store for Renner’s Hawkeye, who was publicly sour about how his character was treated in the first film. We will next see Natasha in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, opposite Chris Evans and Anthony Mackie. From there, of course, she will be featured in the highly anticipated Age of Ultron, where she will once again team with Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, The Hulk, Hawkeye and a couple new members of the team Quicksilver and Scarlett Witch.
