The hottest topic in the comic book world over the past few weeks has been the DC comics Relaunch aka the New52. While blogs and social media feeds have been buzzing, I was really excited to hear from some of the creators in person at the Burbank Ca shop Emerald Knights. The guys at Emerald Knights hosted an event Sunday with some of the writers and artists of many of my favorites so far in the relaunch.
This was my first time visiting Emerald Knights and I was really impressed with the size of the store and the very helpful staff:
The first part of the event was a Q&A in the upper level of the store, usually reserved for gaming. Here is the line up:
Eric Wallace – Writer (Mr. Terrific) (Titans)
Kyle Higgins – Writer (Deathstroke, Nightwing) (Batman: Gates of Gotham)
Sterling Gates – Writer (Hawk & Dove) (Green Lantern Corps #21 & 22)
Mike Johnson – Writer (Supergirl) (Star Trek: Countdown)
Nathan Edmondson – Writer (Grifter) (Who is Jake Ellis?)
Bernard Chang – Artist (DC Universe Presents)
I really enjoyed this informal conversation between creators and fans at Emerald Knights. Lots of great insights into their creative processes and the writer/ artist dynamic. A great mix of ages, and a large ratio of female fans which is always good to see.
Next the signing, where i got to chat a little with Eric, Wallace, Sterling Gates and Kyle Higgins. Higgins even had some great Nightwing art on his Ipad.
There was just one slight hitch that prospective event goers might want to keep in mind: Lack of product. Though I had issues of Hawk & Dove, Nightwing, and Mister Terrific I didn’t bring them. I always try to support shops that hold events by purchasing books at the signing.
Emerald Knights was really low on books in general and the New 52′s specifically. There were about 50-60 people at the signing , so I’m thinking they must have been sold out before hand. Luckily I was able to get a second issue of Mr. Terrific and an issue of Kid flash 2 by Sterling , but I would have loved to have gotten my Hawk and Dove and Nightwing signed. Not a major misstep but I’ll know for future events to call for book availability or bring my own. Emerald Knights: A really great store , very female friendly and great staff. Ill be sure to visit them again soon.
