Not so long time ago, in a galaxy not too far away, Lord of the Rings and Lost star Dominic Monaghan was rumored to be in talks for a role in JJ Abrams’ upcoming film centered in the Star Wars  universe. That rumor never really went anywhere and talk has moved on to numerous other up-and-coming actors, including Jesse Plemmons, Adams Driver and Ed Speleers. Well, don’t count Monaghan out just yet as he is ready and willing to don a Jedi robe and take on the space opera.

The star of the hit series Wild Things was doing some chatting with the folks at DweebCast (via Variety) and said that he is ready to take part in the highly anticipated film, saying “Give me a lightsaber, I’ll do anything.” In addition to that, he mentions that he’s talked with Abrams about the film and gave a bit of insight as to who they are looking at for the film in regards to actors.

“We’ve talked a few times about it,” he said about a possible role. “(Abrams) said ‘We’re putting together a cast of unknowns. We want to follow the ’77 New Hope cast because obviously Harrison Ford wasn’t well known at that point, Mark Hamill wasn’t and Carrie Fisher wasn’t either.”

As we’ve seen from the actors reportedly in talks for a role, they’ve been rather all over the place, from actors such as Gary Oldman and Benedict Cumberbatch to the lesser known actors like those listed above. As far as we know, those have been just rumors at this point, so the unknown route may just be the way they are going. Although, it should be noted that Adam Driver is pretty much a shoe-in for the villain in the film. Monaghan goes on to explain why Abrams is taking this approach.

“What he said was, ‘We don’t want to fall into that mistake of people going, ‘Oh, it’s that guy from that thing!’ and then you’re completely out of the Star Wars universe,’” he said.

We don’t know a whole lot about the film but we know that the film will likely center on a trio of young stars and will take place several decades after the events of Episode VI. Many thought that Disney would unleash some news this past week at CinemaCon but no such luck. The company remains tight-lipped about the project. However, filming is expected to begin filming in May, so we can expect to see some news in the coming weeks, so be sure to check back.

What say you fans, can you see Dominic Monaghan in the Star Wars universe? What role could you see him taking on? Jedi or Sith?
