Dominic Cooper, Helen Mirren, And Joss Whedon Weigh In On The Search For The 12th Doctor

by

doctor whoMatt Smith still has two episodes of Doctor Who left, one of which being the huge 50th Anniversary spectacular, but the talk of the Whovian world has been about who will be taking his place. The list of people who could possibly take Smith‘s place as the world’s most famous Time Lord has included everyone from Idris Elba, Helen Mirren, Dominic Cooper, Jason Statham, and even David Tennant (that will never happen and I’m not sure why people are talking about it). Well two of the big names on the list have weighed in on their chances. A surprising Doctor Who answer from Joss Whedon has recently made its way online as well.

cooperDominic Cooper, better known to folks around these parts as Tony‘s dad Howard Stark, has had his name thrown out as being the next Doctor. His odds with the bookies are pretty good and he would be a pretty solid choice. He is famous, but he hasn’t reached superstardom just yet so him being chosen is still in the realm of possibility. Cooper recently spoke with the Express about those rumors:

What an opportunity it would be. I’ve heard absolutely nothing of this! It’s nice to be thought about though, wherever it came from. It’s a very nice acknowledgement.

Whoever does take it on has a very very hard job. Matt has done such a wonderful, wonderful job with the intriguing, interesting and brave choices he made with him. They’re huge shoes to fill.

helen mirrenPretty diplomatic answer. Good job Mr. Cooper. Helen Mirren also addressed the rumors about her possibly piloting the TARDIS. Her chances are more of a long shot with the bookies, but a lot of fans are still holding out hope Dame Helen will be the person the 11th Doctor regenerates into. She shot those hopes down talking about her 25-1 odds:

Oh, please — I would put much longer odds on it than that. But I think it’s absolutely time for a female Doctor Who. I’m so sick of that man with his girl sidekick. I could name at least 10 wonderful British actresses who would absolutely kill in that role.

Helen Mirren‘s name has been attached to Who before, so this isn’t the first time she’s heard people want her as The Doctor. Nerd overlord Joss Whedon also chimed in with a suggestion of his own. The Much Ado Twitter page has been running the director’s answers to some questions from a screening Q&A that happened earlier today. He thinks his old pal Tom Hiddleston would be a good Doctor.

Hiddleston would be a fantastic choice, but it would be hard to get over the baggage of his previous roles. Of course he has reached the upper levels of superstardom in recent years, so he is probably out of Steven Moffat‘s reach. The search for the new Doctor is going on as we speak, and there are plenty of good choices. Who do you think should take up the TARDIS controls next?
