Doctor Who News: Ice Warriors Return And A 3D Special Confirmed

by

doctor who bannerAs we count down the days to Doctor Who’s March 30th return, we’ll be getting some news and teasers about the rest of series 7 and the 50th Anniversary celebration. Today two pretty big pieces of news hit regarding a returning menace and the show going off into a new dimension.

First up SFX revealed in an exclusive chat with executive producer Caro Skinner that the Ice Warriors would indeed be returning to the show. The menacing Martian invaders will return in episode three of series 7.2 in a story written by Mark Gatiss. Skinner told the site:

We’ve got the most fantastic episode by Mark Gatiss where we are bringing back the Ice Warrior… on a submarine! It’s a really wonderful kind of ‘bunker’ episode, and a classic monster which Mark has brought his own inimitable twist to.

We wanted to bring them back because they’re wonderful! In the mix of stories that we were planning for this year it felt as if doing something very bold with a monster that hadn’t been seen for a while would be really cool. Mark is an enormous fan of the Ice Warrior stories and came up with the idea. The sense of a monster of that scale and that size trapped in a really small, contained environment such as a submarine was a really brilliant story to be able to tell. And obviously we’ve had a huge amount of fun going back to the traditional designs and recreating them, bringing the Ice Warriors back to life again.

The Ice Warriors have been rumored to return almost every season since the show itself returned in 2005. The Ice Warriors were mentioned in 2009’s “The Waters of Mars,” but the last time we visited the Martian warmongers was 1974 in Jon Pertwee’s “The Curse of Peladon.” The race has appeared in several comic strips and audio adventures, but those are not usually recognized as canon. Skinner said they will be getting a bit of a redesign although it seems they will still have their trademark hissing voice:

Ice warriors 2They were such a beautiful original design, and are genuinely really scary in terms of what they look like as they’re coming towards you in that armour. Letting a huge Ice Warrior loose at the heart of a classic Hunt For Red October style submarine movie was exactly the kind of story that the Doctor should get mixed up in. They’ve got really scary voices as well. I spent quite a lot of time on set trying to hiss like an Ice Warrior…

The BBC also announced today that the 50th Anniversary special episode will be 3D (via BleedingCool). The show will also be broadcast in movie theaters since everyone doesn’t have the 3D capabilities at home. We don’t know right now if the movie theater screenings will be shown the same time as the regular TV version of the episode or if it will just be in the UK only, but we’ll keep our eyes peeled for more info. Showrunner Steven Moffat said about the 3D decision “It’s about time. Technology has finally caught up with Doctor Who and your television is now bigger on the inside. A whole new dimension of adventure for the Doctor to explore.

Can you imagine all the 3D possibilities with the TARDIS! Stay tuned to CBT for more info about the 3D special as well as all the biggest Who news. What do you think? Will you be making the trip to the movies if it’s screened in wide release?
