DOCTOR WHO Roundup: The Hurt Doctor, Hashtags, Zygons And More
This Saturday the first official trailer for the Doctor Who 50th anniversary special, The Day of The Doctor, will hit. A mere two weeks later the actual special will air. As we mark down the final few days until the gigantic episode starring Matt Smith, David Tennant, and John Hurt, the cast and crew are out and about promoting the celebrations. I’ve rounded up a few happenings in the Whoineverse today into one convenient place for your reading pleasure. Steven Moffat talks about John Hurt’s Doctor, Strax talks about the Zygons, and The Doctor talks about hashtags.
Steven Moffat spoke with SFX about John Hurt coming aboard Doctor Who and portraying the mysterious Doctor but not THE Doctor character. We’ve only seen Hurt‘s Doctor teased at the end of The Name Of The Doctor, but all the answers will be revealed in The Day of The Doctor. Hurt‘s costume looks like a mix between Paul McGann‘s 8th Doctor and Christopher Eccleston‘s 9th Doctor. Some think that’s intentional and points to the fact Hurt is the Time War Doctor. Moffat says the costume was never intended as a patchwork of other Doctors:
Not particularly. I can see why people say that. Looking at it face to face it didn’t occur to me as a patchwork of previous Doctors at all. It’s a rougher, tougher Doctor. It looks like somehow he’s been through it a bit. We are saying ‘This isn’t a Doctor who’s just appeared, he’s been around, he’s been in this form for a while.’ So one of the notes was make it look as though he’s been knocking around in this incarnation for a bit.
Hurt‘s Doctor is a little older than many Doctors and is even the first Doctor with a beard…kind of. Moffat talked about the bearded Doctor and how they wanted Hurt to look more rugged:
I suppose he is – apart from Tom Baker in ‘The Leisure Hive’. Well, he asked if he could keep his beard, and I looked at it and I thought actually, he looks quite good with it. And it’s another indicator that he’s not a fresh-born Doctor. We didn’t want to imply that he’d just been around for a little while. There’s a whole lot of stuff you missed! It’s a nice thing to be able to say in the show, and for no one to be able to contradict you, that there were years that you didn’t know about… we lied and lied, there’s a whole big old chapter you didn’t know.
You can read the entire interview by clicking here. It’s a great piece on Moffat and sort of gives us a peek behind the curtain on Hurt‘s casting.
On the more promotional side of things, the BBC have released a few videos to help get you prepared for The Day of The Doctor. Field commander Strax sends in another report to the Sontaran Empire. This time the subject is the Zygons. The shape-shifting aliens will make their return in the anniversary episode. They only appeared once before, but their a fan-favorite baddie.
A new video promo for The Science of Doctor Who was released as well. The special will air on BBC 2 and feature Professor Brian Cox exploring the real science and physics behind Doctor Who, separating fact from fiction.
And finally, The Doctor talks to you about the importance of hashtags. The BBC have really been pushing #SaveTheDay, trying to get fans to keep the Doctor Who buzz phrase trending on social media. As we get closer to the premiere, they want it trending
