Deadpool Taking On S.H.I.E.L.D.: Agent Coulson And Crossbones Tagging Along

by

deadpool bannerIt looks like Deadpool is going to do a lot more than touch Lola in his next arc from the superstar writing team of Gerry Duggan and Brian Posehn. The Merc with a Mouth has taken on the reanimated corpses of dead presidents and even his own messed up past, but now he’ll be going up again S.H.I.E.L.D. They owe him money and he intends to collect. The new arc kicks off December 18th and an unlettered preview of issue #21 has been released. The book’s scribe has also teased the story as well as the inclusion of two very special characters.

Speaking with Comic Vine, Duggan talked about the new arc. While Deadpool is attacking the super spy organization head on, Agent Coulson will be trying to redirect Deadpool‘s anger:

On the surface he’s going up against S.H.I.E.L.D., but Coulson is hoping to redirect Deadpool mid-flight. It will be very fair to say that nobody will be able to call Deadpool off of Agent Gorman. We’ll have to see what S.H.I.E.L.D.’s stance is on that. Presumably they wouldn’t want an agent to be attacked by a mercenary. There are some other complications. Like the last page of 19…

Duggan said his job of writing Coulson is made much easier thanks to the great development of the character over all the course of the various movies and TV episodes involving S.H.I.E.L.D.‘s most beloved agent:

Having a crystal clear voice in your head for a character is always a big help for a writer, so credit Clark Gregg, and everybody that’s written for Clark. Coulson has some fun moments in this arc, and those moments come with Scott Adsit, who against all odds has journeyed from the real world into the Marvel Universe. He’s another guy that we’ve got dialed in. Their scenes are fun.

As you can see from the preview below, Crossbones will also be getting in on the action. While the assassin got his backside handed to him recently by Venom, he and Deadpool are a little more evenly matched. Duggan says we’ll see a little skirmish in the opening issue, but the big showdown doesn’t come until a little later on down the line. The writer teased “Crossbones is capable of giving Deadpool a run for his money, but you’re going to have to wait for that to happen until the end of the arc. There’s a fight in 21, but…the main event will happen in 25.
