David Conrad Joins Up With Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. And Cobie Smulders Talks Maria Hill’s Cameo
ABC and Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. premiered at Comic-con to rave reviews. The show has been filming the rest of the first season’s episode over the course of July, and they’re adding another actor into the mix. Cobie Smulders also talks about her appearance of Agent Maria Hill and if she could become a series regular.
TV Line is reporting that Ghost Whisperer’s David Conrad has signed up for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. in a highly secretive recurring role. TV Line theorize that Conrad will be filling the role described as a “brilliant and quirky scientist” that matches Conrad’s description of a male in his 40s. While we’ll have to wait to see if he’s a new character or someone from the comic books, we have another name to add to the impressive S.H.I.E.L.D. series roster.
Cobie Smulders has opened up a little about her guest appearance on the pilot episode of the new series. We had figured that Smulders’ Agent Hill would pop up in the show, but it was confirmed after the advance screening at Comic-Con. Talking with TV Guide (via @Marvel_Freshman), Smulders stated that she had to be just as secretive about the show as Maria Hill is about S.H.I.E.L.D. secrets. The actress was contacted via email by Joss Whedon who asked if she’d like to do a guest spot. Hill will help explain to the audience that Clark Gregg’s Agent Coulson is alive again:
He thought that it would be cool if Maria Hill — and it’s so true — was able to basically tell the audience that Coulson is alive. It’s the best job ever.
[on the Life Model Decoy possibility] That’s what everybody thinks. I thought about that as an option for sure. But that was also the cool thing about it — that she’s in on that serious secret. What does that mean? I don’t even know, but it was so cool.
Smulders has some Marvel film obligations, but she’s about to have a more open schedule as How I Met Your Mother finishes up its final season. It’s possible that she could go from that show into a recurring role in Agents of S.H.I.E.l.D. Smulders plays coy, but it sounds like she’s open to the idea:
We don’t have anything scheduled or figured out yet. It’s a great show. [Executive producers] Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen, who are running it, are fantastic, and obviously Joss Whedon, if he’s around, he’s going to be a little bit busy come the New Year. I loved everybody, but they’re an amazing group of actors, so I feel like we’ll see if there’s even time for Maria Hill to come back because they’re just going to have such great story lines anyway.

The show is pretty ambitious, but if anyone can pull it off it’s Whedon and his band of regulars. What do you think about Maria Hill showing up occasionally? Do you hope this paves the way for Sam Jackson to get the guest spot he’s been campaigning for?
