Dan Abnett Writes A New GUARDIANS Story With ‘Rocket Raccoon & Groot: Steal the Galaxy’

rocketRocket Raccoon really will be the breakout star of 2014. He has been a fan-favorite in the comic book world for years now but with that Guardians of the Galaxy movie coming out in August, Rocket will be introduced to a much larger audience. Marvel is capitalizing on the interest in that little gun-totting raccoon with new comics and now a prose novel from legendary Guardians of the Galaxy writer Dan Abnett. Rocket and Groot will be teaming up for the new novel Rocket Raccoon & Groot: Steal The Galaxy.

Abnett is no stranger to the world of novels, having written over 50 books of his own and for licensed properties like Doctor Who and Warhammer 40,000. This is Abnett‘s first outing into novel for comics though. For that reason the writer wanted to stress that this is an all new Guardians story and not an adaptation of one of his existing stories or a twist on an abandoned storyline. Speaking with Newsarama, the writer described the premise of Steal the Galaxy:

It’s a classic Rocket and Groot adventure, with our two heroes doing their level best to stay alive, keep out of trouble, and save all of reality to boot. It’s both high action and comedic, though I hope the humor derives from context: I’m not treating the Marvel Cosmic Universe lightly or sacrificing its seriousness for comic effect.
The set-up is that Rocket and Groot are down on their luck and try to make a living during a break in the Guardians of the Galaxy activities. They run across a Rigellian Recorder Unit who contains some vital piece of information that just about every major faction in the Marvel Universe would kill to obtain. Naturally, because they are kind-hearted heroes, Rocket and Groot see an instant opportunity to make a lot of money out of the Recorder… I mean, to look after the Recorder and protect him from all dangers. They have seriously underestimated how much trouble they’re going to get into.

The writer went on to describe his pitch for the novel as “John Woo’s Hitchiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” that takes readers on a tour of the Marvel Universe. He says not to be surprised if you see the Kree, Skrulls, Badoon, the Shi’ar Imperial Guard, and the Nova Corps among other things. With Lanning tackling some Guardians comic work for Marvel, it’s nice to see Abnett is doing something as well. The book is released this July. What do you think about Abnett taking on Rocket and Groot again? Will you be checking this out?
