Could JJ Abrams be Flying Away from Star Wars? Star Trek 3 Looking at Thor Writers

by

jj-abrams-star-trek-star-warsUPDATE: As can be expected, Lucasfilm has been quick to refute this rumor. In a statement to IGN, the studio says “There is no truth to the rumor. JJ is having a great time working on the script and is looking forward to going into production next year.” This statement is pretty much fluff and regardless whether Abrams stays or goes, this is something the studio would say. Abrams has yet to say no to returning to direct the third Star Trek film, which as I mention below, is rumored to start filming next year, about the same time as the new Star Wars film. Essentially, Abrams will need to choose between the two huge franchises. You can read the full story below.

To say that 2015 will be a monsterous year in regards to films could possibly be one of the biggest understatements of the century. Just this weekend, it was announced that Zack Snyder would be returning to helm the follow-up to Man of Steel. Oh, and Batman would be part of that film as well. Also this weekend, Marvel blew fans away by announcing the name of the sequel to one of the highest grossing films of all time, Avengers: Age of Ultron. But there are a few other films that are releasing that year as well, like the 24th James Bond film, Ant-Man, Pirates of the Caribbean 5 and a little film called Star Wars Episode VII.

As it stands now, JJ ABrams is set to direct the highly anticipated film, which further explores the Star Wars universe, looking further into the future of Han Solo, Luke Skywalker and his sister Princess Leia. But, things may not be as rosey as we’d hoped them to be. Apparently there are some rumors floating around out there that JJ Abrams may be leaving the high-profile position of directing this films. According to Badass Digest, multiple insiders claim that Abrams is unhappy and is considering dropping the project.

Speaking of losing jobs… why is it that I keep hearing tons of rumors that JJ Abrams is on the verge of dropping out of Star Wars? This has been something I’ve heard for a while now, and from multiple insiders. I know that he didn’t want to shoot the movie in England and was overruled, but that happened a while ago. This weekend at Comic Con I continued to hear these whispers.

The article does point out that Star Trek 3 has yet to sign a director and is looking to shoot next year. Is it possible that Abrams is looking to go back to that franchise? The German Star Wars celebrations is happening soon, so there may be some announcements for casting and the like coming out of that event. It will be interesting to see if Abrams shows for that, if not, it could be very telling.

Speaking of Star Trek 3, it’s also ebing reported by Badass Digest that JJ Abrams’ company Bad Robot is looing at past collaborators Ashley Edward Miller and Zack Stentz to pen the script for the third installment of the rebooted franchise. If the names sound familiar, it’s because they wrote the script for Marvel’s Thor a few years back and also have writing credits on X-Men: First Class. The tie to Bad Robot comes from their work on the supernatural thriller series Fringe on Fox.  It should be noted that Hollywood darlings Alex Kurtzman and Bob Orci are still on as writers. The duo actually played a big part in getting Miller and Stentz hired
