CONSTANTINE To Stay Close To The Source Material; David Goyer Working With NBC On The Character Smoking
Warner Brother’s may be falling behind in the movie department when it comes to getting their characters out there, but the same can not be said for TV shows. They are currently on a blitz of making shows and getting their name out there. As of right now they have Arrow and The Flash, which is currently is filming, on The CW. They are also developing the Jim Gordon driven Gotham at Fox. And who could forget Constantine at NBC.
Man Of Steel writer David Goyer has been tasked with bringing Constantine to life on the small screen, and he promises good things are a head. “We start shooting next week. Shooting the pilot,” he said. “We only have four series regulars but we’ve cast them all now. I’m proud to say that Constantine is actually being played by a British guy. Matt Ryan and he is going to have blond hair.“ One of the character trademarks of Constantine, is that he is a chain smoker. It’s hard to find a panel in one of the comic books with out a cigarette planted firmly in his hand. So this brings us to an important question, will he smoke? “That’s a tricky one on network TV. We’re negotiating right now. He will have his signature trench coat and skinny tie. I would say that the show clings more closely to the source material then the film did. Even though the film was interesting,” said Goyer.
He did go on to say that the show would be more like the Alan Moore version of the characters and we might see a DC character or two pop up. Goyer explined, “Quite a few other characters from the comic books and possibly from the DC universe should we move forward will be showing up.” When he was asked if it would be similar to Arrow he said that they would try to bring in some of the other occult figures.
It seems as if the show will only have four series regulars for the time being, but Goyer said they could be looking to expand. He touched on his cast a bit by saying, “Harold Perrineau. is amazing. He plays an angel but not the kind of angel from Touched by an Angel. He’s fantastic. Charles Halford who plays Reggie Ledoux on True Detective. He plays Chas. I don’t know if you know that character from the comic books. He’s sort of Constantine’s strong man/friend. Lucy Griffiths who is … I don’t want to say too much about her. She’ s an amalgam of characters. Hopefully, touch wood, They’ll be another recurring character announced. Pretty cool actor who fans will know the character he plays from the comic books as well.”
The last thing Goyer spoke on was what to expect in terms of the show and visual effects. When he was asked if the show will utilize a lot of visual effects he said. “Yes, very.” He also revealed that director Neil Marshall who directed The Descent, Black Sails, and Game of Thrones would be handling the pilot. “He’s pretty good with scares,” Goyer teased with a smile.
There has been no word yet on when we might be able to expect the pilot for Constantine. However, with the pilot beginning sometime this week or next, that more than likely means that it will premiere sometime in the fall. Keep it locked here at Comic Book Therapy for the latest on Constantine.
