Colton Haynes Talks ARROW, Comic Book Research, And The Road To Becoming Speedy
Arrow is back and it’s bigger than ever. After having disappointing ratings for the season premiers, the CW show turned things around and had strong numbers for episode 2. Now things are rolling right along and we’re waiting for the introduction of characters like Black Canary and Flash. While the new characters are exciting, old characters taking on new roles is something fans are looking forward to as well. The whole will-he-or-won’t-he dance with Roy Harper becoming Red Arrow/Speedy/Arsenal or whatever version he becomes is at the top of a lot of people’s lists. Colton Haynes recently talked about the new role we’ll see Roy take on this season as well as how his brother helped him prepare for it.
Speaking with Digital Spy, Colton Haynes talked about how he prepared for his role. The physical training is one thing, but with a role like this you need some comic book knowledge. Luckily his brother was able to help him in that department:
Thanks to my brother, Clinton, he’s a huge comic book fan. I wasn’t quite aware how big Roy Harpers character…how big the fan reaction was to it, then eventually I started reading and becoming so interested in his story. You never know, I mean, there’s so many interpretations of Roy Harper. You don’t know if he’s going to lose an arm, become a junkie, or be Speedy or Red Arrow. It’s just fascinating. Now I’ve done my research and my brother wasn’t as excited as me doing the other shows until now. Now he feels like since he gives me Intel on all the comic books that he’s a secret writer. So thank you Clinton.
This season will see Roy‘s backstory explored just as much as his future is teased. We’ll eventually see Haynes take on a larger role and become a hero alongside Stephen Amell, but there is still some ambiguity about who becomes Arrow‘s sidekick:
When I came on the show, Willa had an idea she was going to become Speedy. Then I came on the show and she was like ‘OK are you the one that’s going to ruining my changes of doing this? I want to fight crime!’ They’ve been putting me through training. Each day Willa’s like ‘When am I going to do this?’ You never know, but in different comic books Speedy was a girl. And with Roy Harper, like I said, you never know which way he’s going to go. I can say that I don’t think they’d be putting me through training for nothing.
You can watch the full video below for more from Haynes about the first season’s finale and what might happen with Roy this season. Hopefully we see Roy become and honest-to-goodness hero this season alongside Oliver. What do you think about Haynes‘ comments? What have you thought of the new season so far?
