Christian Bale On The BATMAN Voice And His Advice To Ben Affleck
With the recent Blu-ray release of The Dark Knight Trilogy, the Christian Bale era has truly come to a close. The actor has remained fairly quite about his time wearing the cowl since The Dark Knight Rises press tour wrapped up, but with Ben Affleck announced as Batman for Batman vs. Superman, people are curious to hear what Bale thinks about his successor. Bale is currently making the rounds for his new movie Out Of The Furnace, so he’s getting asked about his time as Batman as well as what advice he would offer the new guy.
MTV asked Bale about the audition video that was featured on the Dark Knight Trilogy Blu-ray and how he went about nailing down his Batman voice. It evolved into a gruff smoker’s wheeze by the end of the trilogy, but Bale did change things up by making sure Batman and Bruce Wayne carried themselves in a different way. Bale said of his audition and voice choice:
I got there. They put me in Val Kilmer’s suit. It didn’t even fit properly, and I stood in it and I went ‘I feel like an idiot.’ What kind of guy walks around, dressed like a bat? And is then going to go ‘Hello, how are you? Just ignore that I’m dressed as a bat.’ Of course, he’s meant to be doing this,
If you look at the history of the guy and the pain that he went through. I went ‘I can’t do this in a normal voice. I have to become a beast in order to sell this to myself.’ I went home that evening, and my wife said, ‘How’d it go?’ I went, ‘I kind of did this.’ And I showed her, and she went, ‘Oh, you f—ed that one up, didn’t you?’
Thank God they went for it. It ain’t for everybody. Ben, obviously, is going to have to do his own thing, but it was the only way that I could find how to get into that and justify wearing that fricking Batsuit. Otherwise he’s just loopy beyond belief. He is loopy, but he’s loopy with a method to his madness.
As for the future Batman, Bale doesn’t have much advice to offer Ben Affleck. He says Affleck is a great actor and director who he wishes all the best, but there’s only one trick he can offer him. Speaking to Access Hollywood about Batkid and Affleck, Bale said:
The only thing I said to him is just make sure he can take a piss without anyone having to help him, because it’s a little bit humiliating, which I went through when you have to have somebody kind of help you out with the costume in order to be able to do that. So that’s my main piece of advice for him.
Bale had to find a way for Batman to make sense for him and so will Ben Affleck. Bale just wants the new guy to know he needs a suit with better bathroom accessibility. Bale has gotten pretty eccentric over the past few years, but you can tell he really appreciates everything Batman stands for. I think Ben Affleck will prove himself a worthy successor for the type of thing Bale is talking about. Hopefully he can hold his liquids a little longer if the suit isn’t retooled. What do you think about Bale‘s comments?
