CBT Recap/Review: SUPERNATURAL Season 8 Episode 1

Well, SPN fans…as said before,THE BATTLE IS ON!! What a season first episode opener!! Dean is back from Purgatory(along with a dangerous and mysterious new “friend”), the team is reunited…AND NOW, Crowley has finally crossed a huge line with Kevin and the Winchesters for which there is no going back.

THE RE-CAP:
For those of you who missed the Season 8 premiere of Supernatural…it was a good one…It all begins with the backdrop taking out off in the country off ways from a main interstate road. Nighttime, a sudden unearthly burst of light and thunderous crackle splits through the darkened sky among a background of trees. A young couple go out to investigate the phenomenon. A young man spots a mysterious figure making his way out. Pointing the flashlight at the intruder, the figure turns a gun on him and asks for his whereabouts. The figure is Dean, bloodied, beaten, and mysteriously, apparently, back on Earth. He asks for the nearest interstate road and takes an equally mysterious burlap sack he had been carrying along with him. As he nears a safe clearing, he releases the contents of the bag onto the ground, which consist of various bones of some human or creature. Dean knives himself on the arm and recites a magical chant as the blood(the creature’s own blood inside Dean’s veins? Not sure) that releases from his vein glows red hot and onto the bones themselves. The creature suddenly ressurects and the two greet each other as old friends, citing relief at finally crossing the void back. The two pass a few words concerning their business back here on Earth and agree to part ways until the time comes for them to meet again.

Take another look at the Season 8 opener promo!!

Sam, was another story altogether. He spent the last year, not in desparate search for Dean anymore, but in having a life. He got involved with another lady in his life and also owns a dog. Still, one early morning, Sam decides to set out to the cabin where Dean and him usually make base to go over plans on their hunts or take refuge. When he arrives, he is overtaken by Dean and Dean goes through the usual Salt/holy water/borax/silver blade cut test to prove they are the ones and only Sam and Dean Winchester. They do the bro-hug and talk of what happened. Sam gets the news in brief that exploding leviathan got Dean stuck in Purgatory and running for his life, and that Castiel did not meet a favorable ending, if he even perished at all.

Cas’ in Purgatory

They move on to locating Kevin Tran who has since escaped from Crowley’s grasp from the use of demon killing ritual tricks learned from his indoctrination as the Prophet. He made his way into hiding and has since called Sam, looking for help from him and Sam sadly ignoring his pleas since giving up his hunter life the last year(which Dean does call him out on later). They also track Kevin’s now ex-girlfriend Channing at college for any information which comes up empty, only to be revealed later, she had been hiding under a guise of demonic possession and immediately contacts Crowley that the Winchesters are back on the trail for Kevin.

Sam and Dean finally track down Kevin and reunite with him, explaining their whole situation the last year…with Kevin explaining his aforementioned escape and newest discovery in the latest Word of God tablet. A long foretold way to seal the gates of hell FOREVER…A secret Crowley very likely does not want the Winchesters getting hold of, for Crowley is looking to release another hell’s Gateway up in the Northeasterly area of the country. Crowley suddenly makes his unwanted appearance and asks for Kevin back, holding a still-possessed Channing at ransom for Kevin’s surrender. But as Crowley takes them away Kevin triggers a bucket of holy water down on Crowley and Channing, forcing them incapacitated for the moment while he escapes with Sam and Dean. As they get away in the Impala and pass the house, Crowley releases the demon from Channing until further notice, and right in front of Kevin’s eyes, snaps Channing’s neck and she falls to the floor.

Supernatural Season 8 Promo#1!

As morning unfolds and the Impala is need of a fill-up at the service station, Sam and Dean try to comfort firmly to Kevin that there is nothing he could have done to save Channing, and that this is a sign that he is in this for the very long haul. Sam continues to comfort Kevin while Dean steps out and makes a call (that he had dropped earlier). The call is to/from the mysterious creature that hopped along with Dean back to Earth. (NOTE: Throughout the earlier parts of the story, are reflections of how Dean came to meet this beast. The beast had saved his life from another attacker while Dean was in a hunt chase with yet another creature through the forest of Purgatory. The beast also knew of God’s secret path for allowing humans to escape Purgatory and that it is reserved for humans only. The creature bargained with Dean for the information, and that he be taken along somehow with him to Earth. An uneasy alliance was then formed.) At near episode’s end, the creature(oddly hanging out incognito at a funeral burial) and Dean talk about when they would meet to discuss about their business back on earth here. Dean asked the creature not to speak to him unless it is an emergency. The creature agrees and they break contact, story ending for now…

Upcoming Look at more time in Purgatory for Dean and Castiel.

Wow, a season already starting off with action, thrills, game plan changes, AND MORE AND MORE QUESTIONS… Is Castiel truly dead? Likely not, but what happened to him? Is Channing truly dead? Who is this mysterious(and from the mean looks of him, potentially dangerous) creature that Dean brought back from Purgatory? What is he? What is his TRUE AGENDA? And more intriguingly, given Dean’s intense loathing and distrust of nearly all things supernatural: How did this creature earn Dean’s near-complete friendship and trust over that year in Purgatory? What all happened in Purgatory altogether and how is to affect Dean long-term?…And finally, is there possibly more to Kevin’s escape from Crowley than meets the eye?

Here we go again, more vampire troubles for Dean… on unfriendly territory this time, Purgatory of course..

BOTTOM LINE FOR EPISODE ONE: For what matters..
Supernatural Season 8 opener gave a good start with intrigue and anticipation as we were already met with Dean’s relieving return from Purgatory at the start. The buildup of the reunion of the brothers was planned well, but as well as any Supernatural episode where one of the brothers takes a spill off the grid for the season end cliffhanger and then returns the following one(well, it is getting to be a regular occupational hazard..). The demon/leviathan/shifter test when reuniting is always a good laugh. The same goes for the reunion with Kevin and how he made his escape from Crowley later on. Totalled there, the round-up of the heroes in this story flowed really well with no real surprises. The first flashbacks of Dean’s time in Purgatory were brief but adventurous and mainly for show on how Dean and his new ally met and made their deal for escape. The whole hush/hush about everything in the game plan for how Dean will manage now back on earth, Sam willing to give it his all after trying to settle with a normal life for a year, is a slight challenge to the plot of this season’s adventures. The real intrigue though, seems to be in what part this Purgatory creature will play in the series and will Kevin come through as Prophet and with the Winchesters, take down Crowley and his minions back to hell and seal them all away for good. The sudden “killing” of Channing at the end of the episode was not too much of a surprise, but definitely a good game plan changer… This is REALLY letting the audience and fans know, the gloves are now off in this battle with Crowley. Good acting performances by all, and a great write up by Edlund, Carver, and company. Good direction by Dean himself, Mr. Jensen Ackles.. The season looks to be very intriguing and engaging for fans of the show this year. Let’s hope it stays a good one.
