Can The Dark Knight Rise Above The Avengers?

If any movie coming out this year has a chance to knock The Avengers off of its recent record breaking streak, it is The Dark Knight Rises. Christopher Nolan’s last outing is tracking pretty high as of now.
The film doesn’t open until July 20, but it is currently tracking for the high end of $150 million for its opening weekend according to the LA Times. It is expected to open extremely well, and some projections even have it approaching The Avengers record. The Dark Knight took in $158.4 million when it premiered in 2008. With a built-in fanbase and the enormous success of The Dark Knight, Rises can certainly pull in the money. It will have to if it hopes to match The Avengers $207.4 million opening. Avengers recently passed $600 million domestically as well.
Rises most certainly has a real chance of unseating The Avengers, but the question remains if some mixed fan reaction regarding Bane and Catwoman will hurt it or if it’s just regular fanboy whining. The Dark Knight had a certain amount of buzz due to Ledger’s death, but it stood head and shoulders above other comic book movies in its own right. Can Nolan capture lighting in a bottle again? Can it unseat The Avengers? Tune in next month. Same Bat time, same Bat channel.

It’s insane to even think that in one year 2 or 3 movies based on superheroes can bring in this kind of money.
sooo true!
You know DC fanboys aren’t going to sit there holding onto money when Avengers was bossing it up. They’ll go watch it every showing just to put bats back on top.
I think there are two simple reasons why The Avengers will hold its ground.
First of all, The Avengers was/is a movie for all the family. Kids would have enjoyed it just as much as adults and with Chris Hemsworth and Scarlett Johansson gracing the screen, females would have enjoyed it just as much as males. While The Dark Knight Rises will no doubt be a huge movie, it simply doesn’t have the base demographic and universal appeal that The Avengers had. It’s more of tense and dramatic movie which will appeal to the 16-30 demographic and parents will be extremely reluctant to bring the kids to such a dark film.
I think bats will be close to Avengers in opening weekend, fully supported by fanboys but I don’t think that it will make more $500 in its entire run and certainly it WON’T make more than Avengers did worldwide !
The reason is stated ^ above by Pedro Marques.
TDKR beat The Avengers?!
No.
