Bryan Singer Says Letting the X-Men Franchise Go was “Traumatizing”

Setting your argument of whether Bryan Singer’s X-Men films are a good representations of the characters aside, the franchise has ushered in an entirely new genre of film that we geeks only dreamed about. Bryan Singer, of course, directed the first two films in the franchise and when you invest that much time and effort into a film, it becomes something special to you and holds a special place in your heart. So when it came time for a third film to be made, Singer had to make a choice: make X-Men 3 or take on a new Superman film. We all know the choice he made and I think most would agree it was a bad one for all of us.
Brett Ratner was eventually brought in to helm the film and while the end result had one or two shining moments, the movie as a whole was underwhelming to say the least. While promoting Jack the Giant Slayer recently, Singer talks of how bad it actually hurt to let the franchise go.
I’ve never told anybody this, but I found the whole letting go of the characters for X-Men 3 so traumatising that a friend, who shall remain nameless, had to take me to a secret location and show me the reels so far, just so I could make my peace with it.
I understand that some folks don’t like the films that Singer has given us, but had he stayed on for the third film, there would have at least been some continuity and “feel” that would have carried over. Singer, of course, was brought back into the franchise, first as a producer for Days of Future Past and then as a director once Matthew Vaughn stepped out of the role. The film is headed into production in a few weeks and he’s definitely got his hands full in combining what are essentially two different film franchises. He recently stated that DOFP will fix some things in regards to continuity, but not all. It’s a start, I guess.
Would you rather have had Singer stay with the X-Men franchise or are you happy with the end result of The Last Stand?

I don’t think Singer is a good director. He puts his vision ahead of the source material in most cases and as we saw in Superman Returns his vision is not 20/20. X-2 was good, but I think that was more in part of the performances of Hugh Jackman and his Scoobies in his part of the movie and got lucky with the story they were telling. That and The Usual Suspects are his only films he directed I would consider good. A part of me feels that the reason Matthew Vaughn stepped down from directing is because Singer asked him to and not Days of Future Past is going to be a mish-mash of universes resulting in a disjointed movie and not connected to either set of previous X-Films.
