Brian Michael Bendis Teases A Secret TV Project, But What Could It Mean?

bendisThis weekend Brian Michael Bendis took time out of his busy schedule to answer some fan questions over on his Tumblr page. The current X-Men and Guardians of the Galaxy scribe usually spends some of his free time answering all manner of serious questions about comic books, the writing process, and what he may or may not be working on. He also tackles questions from trolls, and it’s usually hilarious, but that’s neither here nor there. Late Saturday night he answered a question about whether or not he’s been asked to do any consulting on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and what he said was pretty intriguing.

Bendis serves on the Marvel movie committee, overseeing the various Marvel Studios films and offering ideas. Since he’s so entwined in the movie process, it’s not too far of a leap to think he may be involved with the movie tie-in show, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. He said he hasn’t because he’s too busy producing the Powers TV show, consulting on the Spider-Man cartoon, and working on “something else you guys don’t know about yet. I can’t be EVERYWHERE :)” The Powers show has been in various stages of development for several years now and Ultimate Spider-Man is still chugging along, but the other secret project is pretty juicy. Bendis said something similar a few months ago, but we may have a few clues about it now.

This is the part of the article where I go in to complete speculation and trying to connect dots that may or may not actually connect. It has been revealed that Marvel is working on some new TV projects, a full series and a miniseries or two, for streaming programs and network television. Jeph Loeb, head of Marvel‘s TV division, has been tight lipped about those rumors but Marvel Studios head honcho Kevin Feige has been a little more open. Feige was asked specifically about some of the rougher characters like Punisher and Daredevil, and whether or not we could see them in a Disney movie. Feige said that he thinks Marvel wouldn’t do an R-rated film, but television would allow them to push those boundaries. He pointed to The Walking Dead and how it would be rated R if it were a film. Feige has been talking about both Punisher and Daredevil a lot. It wouldn’t be too much of a leap of logic to think we could see one or the other making it on the small screen. If Bendis‘ ‘secret project’ is for Marvel, then it may be for one of those rumored TV projects. Bendis is known for runs on comics like Spider-Man, Ultimate Spider-Man, X-Men, Avengers, and there his name again, Daredevil. This could all be wishful thinking and just me being an overexcited fanboy, but maybe Bendis is working on something big. Marvel recently reacquired the rights to several characters, so maybe they want to get one on TV before (or maybe instead of) on the big screen. Only time will tell, but we can theorize on what it is. What do you think?
