Bill Willingham Ending FABLES And Going Into Semi-Retirement

fablesHere’s some surprising comic book news that just hit the web. Bill Willingham has announced that he will be ending Fables in about a year’s time with issue #150 and will be going into a semi-retirement of sorts from comic book work. The scribe made the announcement on his personal website.

Fables started in 2002 as a Vertigo series based on different characters from fairy tales and folklore, who call themselves Fables, who find themselves forced from their homelands into our world. It has resulted in numerous spin0ffs and even a video game, Telltale‘s recent released The Wolf Among Us. Over the 12 years of the series’ monthly run, we’ve seen pretty much every character you can imagine get a part in the overall story. Willingham announced that he felt it was time to start wrapping things up. Issue #150 will hit in about a year and be a larger than usual issue. Willingham posted the following on his site:

After more than ten years of publication, and hundreds of issues of Fables, and various Fables-related works, I have decided the time has come to begin the process of bringing our sweeping story to a close. And, along the way, I’ve decided to retire from a great deal of my comics work.

Retirement in the storytelling trade means, still working and writing every day, but being a bit more selective in what projects I take on. Pushing 60, I thought it would be a good time to start making concrete plans for those remaining good writing years.

Fables will end with Issue 150, which will be a larger than usual size, as were many of the other milestone issues. Fairest, our companion series, will also come to an end just before the big final Fables issue.
Both DC and I will announce more details later on, but first and foremost I wanted to let our wonderful readers know about this as soon as I could, and note that our story plans leading up to Issue 150 made it increasingly clear that this upcoming saga should naturally be the final story.

Of course Mark is already well aware of this and said, “I respect Bill’s decision and am looking forward to working with him on the book’s epic final year, leading to the series’ grand finale.”

Willingham will wrap things up in a grand fashion and then go into retirement. He says retirement, but it sounds like a semi-retirement. Hopefully we’ll see the writer present more great stories soon. With him saying the retirement is just so he can be more selective about what he writes, we can probably expect a few more labors of love in the future. More details about Fables conclusion and Bill Willingham‘s retirement will hit in the coming weeks. What do you think about #150 being the finale for Fables near 14 year run?
