Brian Michael Bendis is getting ready to kick off the new Guardians of the Galaxy comic book, but he also has some insights into the upcoming movie directed by James Gunn. The comic book writer has talked to Gunn about the film as Marvel comics and movies usually try to sync up somewhat to create the ever important corporate synergy. While on a conference call with comics retailers, the discussion of course turned to the movie. Bleeding Cool got the highlights.
Bendis made it pretty clear he couldn’t talk about the movie, starting off by saying “We are not able to speak about anything that’s going on in the movies on a call like this.” While he wasn’t able to TALK ABOUT anything, he was able to TALK AROUND and give some of his thoughts on it. One of the big things people are discussing is the fact Tony Stark will join the comic book Guardians. Many think a recent Deep Space Armor toy for Iron Man 3 hints there may be a crossover in the movies as well. Bendis gave his thoughts on the idea:
Tony standing back and wondering what the Earth needs from him… what he can do for the Earth, for the galaxy… and then taking that back into his next Avengers adventure is a good story worth telling with Tony Stark.
The other big internet rumor is that Marvel are thinking about Adam Sandler for the voice of Rocket Raccoon. Bendis weighed in on that as well, talking about how he got Rocket’s “voice” right in his head. He had to rewrite Ultimate Spider-Man because he was writing a Bruce Willis raccoon from a movie he watched with his family. When he imagined Jason Statham‘s voice, he was able to get what he wanted. He noted Statham’s “English vowels.” Bendis said “Adam Sandler would be good, but Jason Statham would be good also.”
Bendis did talk more in-depth about the comic book, teasing big parts for Groot and Rocket. They’ll even be some interesting earth based stories to highlight Rocket, a raccoon with a gun stranded on earth. The writer also promised some shocking developments coming out of Age of Ultron. You can click over on the source link to read more details about the comic book. To his movie points though, Statham is a great choice even if it’s only in Bendis’ head. As soon as the Guardians movie was announced, Statham was one of my top choices. The Tony Stark angle is also interesting. One would imagine Iron Man 3 would hint at any involvement if it comes about, so we don’t have too long to wait. What do you think? What voice do you hear when you think of Rocket Raccoon? Do you think Tony will pop up in the movies? He’s already in the comics.
