Ben McKenzie Has Been Cast As GOTHAM’s Detective Jim Gordon
There have been a lot of rumors about who would be playing Detective Jim Gordon in Fox‘s Gotham pilot, but today all of that speculation is put to rest as it has just been announced that Ben McKenzie (Southland, The O.C.) will be our younger Gordon.
Entertainment Weekly is reporting that the series exploring a Gotham city before Batman bursts on the scene and cleans things up has settled on its Jim Gordon. McKenzie will star in the show that introduces us to a 10 or 12-year old Bruce Wayne and villains like Riddler, Catwoman, the Penguin, and Joker before they became the infamous rogues that challenge Batman‘s skills later in life. Word on the street is that Penguin will be the first villain we’re introduced to in the pilot. Mckenzie‘s Gordon will investigate the murder of Bruce‘s parents before the young and newly orphaned boy starts his journey around the world to train for his role as the protector of Gotham City. Deadline describes the character as “an idealistic rookie detective for Gotham City Open Police Department’s Homicide Squad, a former college football star and a war hero.“
McKenzie is an interesting choice for the role. He’s definitely the younger pre-Commisioner Gordon we were promised. The actor has also had a brush with Batman world previously in the animated world, voicing the hero in Batman: Year One. McKenzie has spent his entire small screen career with Warner Bros. TV to date, so he’s a clear favorite at the studio. The Warner Bros. property is being fast tracked by Fox with writer and executive producer Bruno Heller and director Danny Cannon attached for the pilot. There are still rumors that Donal Logue will be a part of the show as well. It was originally reported that he might be Gordon, but that has since shifted to him signing on for Harvey Bullock. Detective Bullock is said to be a character who will serve as the young Gordon‘s mentor in the show. We’ll have to wait and see about that, but what do you think about McKenzie being cast as Detective Gordon?
