Variety is reporting that Oscar Winning actor Sir Ben Kingsley is in final talks to play the villain in the next installment of the Iron Man franchise. Before you get too excited, we’re going to have to wait and see who he is playing because insiders have said it is not The Mandarin.
Insiders confirmed Kingsley’s involvement, but Marvel has not commented on this as of yet. The sources are denying that Kingsley will play The Mandarin, a Chinese scientist and martial arts expert who uses the ten rings of power. The Mandarin, of course, is one of Iron Man’s biggest foes. Mandarin was also alluded to in the first film, and Jon Favreau had hoped to use the villain if he returned for the third film.
Kingsley’s character is supposed to play a villain who is involved with the spread of a virus through nanobots. Iron Man 3 is loosely based on the Extremis storyline, elements of which were present in both Iron Man films.
Iron Man 3 will be helmed by Shane Black who is also co-writing the script with Drew Pierce. Production is set to start in May in North Carolina. The film is scheduled for May 3, 2013.
