Axel Alonso Talks Marvel NOW! Wave Two And The Return Of What If? Comics

what ifMarvel‘s Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso teased some of the publisher’s big plans for a couple of new titles and a relaunched fan favorite in his weekly chat with CBR. Alonso was asked about Marvel NOW! and how it looked like everything was running along rather smoothly, leaving little room for expansion and new titles to come out. He assured readers more things are coming in Marvel NOW! Wave 2:

Fear not. There are plans for a Marvel NOW! Wave 2 — a new wave of titles that will generate the same amount of excitement amongst retailers and fans that the first wave did. From “Uncanny Avengers” to “Thanos Rising,” Marvel NOW! has been a hit, and we’re far from done. Look for exciting new series, starting in July and carrying through next year.

Part of Wave 2 will be more mini series and books like the recent Fury Max. Alonso said that an announcement will be made soon about three limited series with “eyebrow-raising talent” that will kick off later this year. There will also bee more MAX series coming as well. But the biggest announcement came when Alonso touched on the new What IF? series coming this summer. Fans love the What If? titles that give readers a chance to see how big moments would play out if a few little details were different. Jimmy Palmiotti and Jorge Molina will kick off a four issue series called What If? Avengers Vs. X-Men this July.

In fact, if you’ve ever wondered what might have happened if the Phoenix Force had found a different host than Cyclops, Emma Frost, Namor and Colossus in last year’s biggest super hero event, then you’ll want to read “What If? Avengers Vs. X-Men,” a 4-issue limited series, written by Jimmy Palmiotti and illustrated by Jorge Molina that ships weekly this July. I don’t want to give too much away about the story, but let’s just say that things might have gone a lot differently if Magneto had taken a stronger hand in determining Hope’s fate.

AvX got a mixed reception from fans, but Palmiotti writing a What If? series may be enough to get a lot of readers back into that particular Marvel event. So Marvel NOW! is expanding with a new wave coming over the next few months. That was expected, but it will be interesting to see what other titles make the cut. Readers have been hopping on the MAX train as well, so it will be exciting to see if current books get expanded or they bring in new characters. What do you think? Will you be getting back on the What If? train with Palmiotti?
