Andy Diggle Leaving Action Comics Before He Even Gets Started

diggle bannerGrant Morrison‘s final issue of Action Comics hit shops today. After the extra-sized finale, Andy Diggle was supposed to come in and take over. Well, we’ll get one issue from Diggle. The writer announced on his Twitter today that he was stepping down from writing duties.

Diggle took to his Twitter this morning to make the shocking announcement. The reason cited is “professional reasons” which if you know about comics means “a nasty split between writer and publisher, probably having something to do with editorial decisions.” Instead of going Tweet by Tweet, here’s what Diggle had to say:

Sadly, I’ve decided to walk away from Action Comics for professional reasons. It was the toughest decision I’ve ever had to make, especially with Superman’s 75th anniversary and Man of Steel on the horizon. But it was the right decision. No regrets. Onwards! Sincere thanks to Matt Idelson for inviting me to follow Grant Morrison on Action Comics. I hope we still get to work together someday. Thank you to all the fans who’ve expressed their enthusiasm in anticipation of my run. I wish nothing but the best of luck to whichever new creative team picks up the red boots and cape. Meanwhile find me on DOCTOR WHO for @IDWPublishing, THIEF OF THIEVES for @Skybound, UNCANNY for @DynamiteComics and SNAPSHOT at @ImageComics

DC has been promoting Diggle and artist Tony Daniel taking over the book pretty heavily the past few weeks. It’s been announced since Diggle‘s remarks that Tony Daniel will take over writing duties to finish what would have been the first arc. No word just yet if he will also draw his own script. There’s also an unconfirmed report that Joshua Hale Fialkov will step down from writing Green Lantern Corps and Red Lanterns for similar “professional reasons.” Bleeding Cool is running that rumor, and with there track record it’s a safe bet it’s true. Sounds like there are a lot of problems going on behind the scenes. It’s very odd that two writers abandon ship before their respective first issues are out. What do you think about this news? Will it have you changing your pull list?
