AMAZING SPIDER-MAN Producers On Whether Or Not You Can Have Too Many Villains
When news about The Amazing Spider-Man 2 first started hitting, some fans started having Spider-Man 3 flashbacks. It was revealed that Rhino (Paul Giamatti) and Green Goblin (Dane DeHaan) would be joining main villain Electro (Jamie Foxx) in the Marc Webb directed sequel, and some feared we’d get too many villains running around and not really doing anything. While it turns out Rhino and Green Goblin have minor roles, the debate about whether or not you can have too many villains rages on. It’s a valid argument to make considering how many superhero movies we have nowadays and how jam-packed they are starting to become. IGN asked Spider-Man producers Matt Tolmach and Avi Arad that very question.
In the next installment of their interview with the site, Tolmach and Arad sort of dance around the question and talk about how the villains in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 all service the story. Arad, the longtime Spider-Man producer, does bring up Spider-Man 3 as well. It seems they don’t think you can have too many villains as long as you do some heavy lifting with the story. It’s a large, complex, and rambling answer in parts. You can hear it all for yourself below. What do you think? Can you have too many villains?
