The Answer is an absolute thrill-ride. The series had you thinking you knew what was going to happen, then it did a complete 180.

A mind is a terrible thing to waste. Can Devin and the Answer think their way free of the Brain Trust before CHEMICAL X breaks their brains for good? The explosive conclusion of this superhero mystery!

The Answer wraps up this week with the release of the fourth issue. Dark Horse’s kind-of-superhero book is based on a story from Dennis Hopeless and Mike Norton. Hopeless writes the story and Norton handles art. Mark Englert provides colors and CRANK! tackles lettering. So is this a grand finale or does it go out with a whimper?

When last we saw Devin and Answer, they were in a sticky situation in an insane asylum. A crazy bald man with a gun had just shot Answer in the guts. We pick up with as Devin tries to figure out what the heck just happened. Our gun wielding maniac is tackled by an orderly and the Devin gets the gun. Then out of nowhere the suave looking motivational speaker on TV in the first issue appears. He talks Danswer coverevin down and gets Answer some medical assistance. Our new character takes Devin aside and the two talk about everything that has happened since we first meet her in her library all those months ago. We learn why everything has happened and most all of the dots are connected. Of course there is an ulterior motive behind everything we’ve seen, and Devin is the key to it all. Devin is the only one that can solve a puzzle that has stumped fifty generations of historians and cryptographers. Devin is forced to do something that could doom the world. Can the Answer make another miraculous recovery? Can Devin actually solve the puzzle?

The Answer has been a great series. With the first two issues you think you’re going to get an above average superhero tale with a little bit of mystery thrown in. The final two issues take a huge turn and goes off in a direction you didn’t even think it could go. It’s an exciting story that leaves you guessing what will happen next up until the final panel is revealed. Hopeless and Norton created something unique with this one. Norton’s art is just as good as the previous outings. He gets to do something very impressive and funky once the bit about the final puzzle starts happening. I won’t ruin that for you, but you’ll know what I’m talking about when you read it. We get a lot of Answers, but our punctuated hero is still a big mystery. We do get a slight hint of how he may have pulled these things off, but we won’t know for sure for a while.

Bottom Line: The Answer is an absolute thrill-ride. The series had you thinking you knew what was going to happen, then it did a complete 180. Hopeless and Norton have pulled off four great issues with this series, and it will be very interesting to see where it goes next. 4.5/5
