A Truckload Of Man Of Steel News And Pics: A Connected DC Universe, Baby Superman And Much More
Yesterday EW unveiled their Man of Steel cover, and today the floodgates have opened on new information and several new pics from the Zack Snyder directed film. Depending on how much you want to know about the film before you get to see it, these could be considered spoilers. You know the drill by now.
First off, /Film got hold of the images you see at the bottom of the page. The new pics of Superman, Zod, Jor-El, and the rest of the cast come from EW’s new issue. Next up is a truckload of new story details for the film. Script writer David Goyer talked about what makes Kal-El special. This is something that was hinted at when the magazine cover was revealed. It turns out that on Krypton people are bred to be warriors, scientists, etc. Kal-El is unique because he’s one of the only naturally conceived, free from genetic manipulation babies on Krypton. This leads to a whole nature vs. nurture aspect and Superman choosing his own course. He mere existence is illegal on Krypton.
As for Zod, Michael Shannon says he isn’t a dyed-in-the-wool villain. He has an “affection” for all Kryptonians including the Big Blue Boyscout. He simply wants Supes to be “patriotic.” Zod’s battle armor is something all Kryptonians are outfitted with. It goes on top of their suits. Because Suerpman is a refugee, he doesn’t have the battle gear that goes on top of his outfit.
Now to the BIG stuff. It has been rumored since the start that Man of Steel will open up a wider DC movie universe and ultimately lead into the long-awaited Justice League film. According to a recent interview by EW’s Anthony Breznican, that seems to indeed be the case. Warner Bros. Pictures Group president Jeff Robinov said:
It’s setting the tone for what the movies are going to be like going forward. In that, it’s definitely a first step. I think you’ll see that, going forward, anything can live in this world. [Nolan’s] Batman was deliberately and smartly positioned as a stand-alone. The world they lived in was very isolated without any knowledge of any other superheroes. What Zack and Chris have done with this film is allow you to really introduce other characters into the same world.
Most exciting of all is Robinov stating that in the next several weeks WB will make an announcement that will position “the DC characters and the movies we’re going to be making.” So start the clock, an announcement is coming! As a final parting shot, Robinov also flat out said no, Christopher Nolan and Christian Bale are not coming back for a Justice League movie. You can read everything Robinov had to say, as well as a few words from David Goyer by clicking right here. I highly encourage you do so.
