A third entry into the Batman Arkham series will be released sometime this year. The announcement snuck up on many gamers as it was announced as part of Time Warner’s latest earnings report. CFO John Martin stated the company will have a “strong game release this year, which will include the next release in the Batman Arkham franchise.” While a new Arkham game was widely expected, the news that Rocksteady will not be developing it was not.
According to sources, the new game is not in development at series creator Rocksteady Studios. Rocksteady has instead shifted their focus to a rumored prequel game that will show Batman’s first run-in with the Joker. That game is not expected until late 2014 at the earliest. Warner Bros. registered 15 new Batman domain names last month including Arkham Universe, Arkham Origins, Arkham Legend and others.
Arkham Asylum was a solid game, but Arkham City was hugely successful and critically acclaimed. The third installment has been teased by the likes of Mark Hamill with an Arkham World joke at the Spike VGA awards in 2011, but nothing is known about the game other than it has a lot to live up to. With Rocksteady moving on to another Bat game, it will be interesting to see what company steps in and how they treat the franchise. With a 2013 release planned and the cat now out of the bag, it shouldn’t be long before we hear more. Stay tuned to CBT for more Arkham news.
